Rewards charts for kids? - Mouths of Mums

Hello!

How successful are rewards charts? I have started to do them with my child and have had success though I wanted to know what other Mums’ thoughts were?

  • We like using reward charts for our 6 year old. We have had success in the past with toilet training, sleeping in their own bed, helping around the house, brushing teeth, putting away shoes. We have sticker charts and when enough are earned, she gets to take something out of the “rewards bag”

  • I believe it all depends on the age and incentives that are on offer. We use one for our 3 year old where after 20 stickers he earns a small prize. Every 20 sticker is a star so he knows which ones he is aiming for. We do make it slightly harder each time to earn stickers so he doesn’t rely heavily on it and learns that we have to do things and not always get a reward.

  • Reward charts can actually work really well for many families, especially with younger kids, when they’re used consistently and for the right behaviours.

  • I think reward charts for children can be both negatively and positive based on child, I have twins and whilst they work remarkably for one of them it stresses the other twin out and causes anxiety for them if they don’t have the same rewards or feel like they aren’t doing enough in life. But we for the other child they absolutely strive and it’s incredible

  • This will definitely be something I’ll use when my little guy is older. I think it’s a great way to encourage responsibility while giving them a sense of accomplishment. Something visual they can see what they are achieving. It would be a great way to earn little treats. And eventually an allowance

  • We love them! Weve found them super useful for getting them to do things we want them too! We made them up for each child, and when they got 10 stickers on their chart they got a prize. We had a bag of random toys – hot wheels cars, sticker books, playdoh, kindergarten surprises, small Lego’s etc and they could pick what they wanted. We were struggling with our 7 year old coming into our bed in the middle of the night so we did one and after 14 days she got a labubu because she’d been begging for one for ages. Worked a treat! We also used it for toilet training with my son and it worked great 😀 they loved putting their own stickers on it after they’d earned them.

  • My daughter’s kindergarten teacher would use reward charts and it really motivated all the children.

  • We have had a lot of success with reward charts with both our kids. We have used them for behavioural issues (one of mine was biting other kids so we rewarded him for good days when he didn’t bite), toilet training and getting one of our children to stop sucking her fingers.

  • Some kids love them and some don’t. Depends on what motivates them but if it’s working for you keep it going.

  • Chore charts can be fun too.

  • Chore charts are terrific and as long as there is consistency they achieve desired results.

  • They can work really well and are brilliant for training children to co operate with the house chores and homework. The gold stars were a hit!
