Hello!

Hi mums! I’m always in the kitchen cooking dinner or tasty treats. My 15 month old loves to sit on the bench and watch or help! But I’m extremely worried that he will fall off! My question is can anyone recommend a seat that can go on, or next to, the bench that he can safely sit in while I cook? Thanks

  • i find my highchair is at the perfect height for my kids to see me making dinner.

  • When my kids were little, I had a seat that slipped onto benches and tables. Was real handy when we ate out or at friends places. Only cost about $30 too

  • I too can’t think of a safe chair for a youngster, other than a high chair.

  • I personally don’t know of any. Will your highchair sit at the same height if you take the tray off? Use the harness in the highchair and your baby can’t fall. Another option is to buy a sturdy high stool with a back on it. You can get seats that include straps or strong ties that anchor it to the stool and have a built-in harness. It may not have shoulder straps. I never used one but I have relatives and friends who have. Some have removable trays, others don’t have one. I hope this idea helps you. We try to avoid our little ones going into the kitchen area as although we keep telling them not to touch the stove, oven or microwave oven at all (it is surprising what they can reach when standing on tippy toes) and they will also go through stages of testing the boundaries. It is great if you have wide benches, even against the walls. We have found them much safer.

  • An ordinary kitchen chair would suffice wouldn’t it, he can still see you. Or do you still have a high chair? That would be good too

  • You could try one of those travel seats that are substitutes for high chairs? Or just use your regular high chair? That’s what I do with my little one.

  • A high chair is probably the way to go!

  • great answer Kathryn …. well done good research

  • I would go with a high chair :)

  • I would go with a high chair that way you can wheel it around.

  • the one kathryn suggested does look good

  • I think high chair more safe for your son to seat in the kitchen.

  • I love the look of the one Kathryn suggested

  • I saw ones that I am pretty sure attach at my local baby store… aha, like this one: http://www.babyzonedirect.com.au/phil-ted-s-lobster-clip-on-portable-highchair-red.html?gclid=CMXUvI7mh74CFVYGvAoddAYASg

  • I would use a high chair so he can’t fall out…

  • I always put the high chair right up to the bench. Seemed the safest option.

  • High chair is a good option. Otherwise we have really chunky bar chairs with backs and are solid. The kids kneel on them to pass things over and when it’s there turn to stir they have to sit on the chair and I pass the bowl to them.

  • i would use a high chair where they are safe.

  • My 3yo loves to do the same. I pull a dining chair up to the bench and he stands besides me and watches/helps me out.

  • If a highchair won’t work, the safest thing would probably be to bring the workbench down to his level! Have your ingredients on the table before you invite him over to help. It might be more work and a little more bending down on your half, but better that than him slipping from the bench!
