Sensitive to scents - Mouths of Mums

Hello!

I’m finding at I get older scents are bothering me more. Like if I’m in the car and my daughter sprays a perfume or something I need to open a window because it’s just too much. Even at Bunnings the other day a lady sprayed a bug spray to ‘see if it was working’ before she purchased it and I had to walk away because the scent was too much.
Has anyone else found this sensitivity worsens with age?

  • It is a very good idea when sensitive to scents to have on hand whatever is used to combat the horrible impact of being sensitive to scents. There are particular scents that cause me nausea and migraine and I always have my medications on hand in my handbag; this is particularly important when travelling

  • I have a very sensitive system and particular scents do indeed trigger an allergic reaction. I do try and avoid the scents when possible. I do in a very polite manner mention it to people if I am in regular contact with them and they kindly avoid using the scents when I visit or am around them.

  • Some scents definitely give me a headache; mainly patchouli “Hippie” scents and any form on intense = instant migraine. I hate incense. I am not sure if this is relevant to you, but women with ADHD tend to find their ADHD symptoms increase during perimenopause and sensory sensitivities, including smells can become more overwhelming or even nauseating.

  • I’ve always been prone to migraines and have noticed they can be triggered more easily now. I completely avoid cheap and dupe perfumes, what ever they use to make the scents lasts days and days really gets to me. Normal perfume is absolutely fine though. It can be tricky to know what will trigger it

  • No I didn’t experience this either but it is quite normal for your sensitivity to change with age. Due to hormone changes (like menopause- as you see with pregnancy) the sensitivity for smells are getting higher for some, whilst other experience they smell less due to degeneration of nerves and tissues. Other things like infections, underlying health conditions like anxiety or migraines make scents intolerable too in which case it isn’t as much related to age.

  • No, I haven’t had that experience. But it sounds similar to what a lot of women experience in pregnancy, which suggests it may actually be a hormonal thing. It depends how much it bothers you – if it’s a lot, you may want to talk to your doctor. Otherwise, my sympathies.
