Hello!

I have begun swimming lessons with my 8mo daughter, and the other mothers (all of who seem older than me, I am in my early 20’s) at the swim school with their older children seem to glare at me and make me feel very uncomfortable as I wait, in my one-piece swimmers, for the lesson before us to end. Would it be a cowardly act to drop out the lessons now and start again at a later date, or just suck it up and keep going? Just wanted to know what other mum’s would do in my position.

  • Don’t give up completely!! Try another swim school. I personally would continue and ignore the ignorance of others. Be proud of who you are

  • It’s sad that they make you feel this way. However you don’t do anything wrong and are a devoted mumma to hour child. Just smile when they look at you and say hi. Maybe they turn around on that.

  • Keep going with it. Chin up, you are doing a great parenting thing getting your child lessons. Who cares about you’re age, those judge mums need to get over themselves.

  • I would stick with it and ignore the other mums.

  • Stick with it – don’t let others prevent you enjoying swim lessons with your child (and don’t let your child miss out because of them). As uncomfortable as it may be, perhaps try talking to them – people find it hard to be rude when you’re being nice and approaching them for conversation

  • Personally I think the other older mums are jealous :) I would see the term out, especially if you’ve paid for it but no matter which swimming centre or time slot you go to, you’ll come accross the same thing.

  • who cares what others think! maybe say hi and get friendly with the,m

  • keep going you are doing the right thing for baby and you
smile and be happy they will take to you
ask for advice is always good trick
to get information and make friends quick

  • Don’t let them bully you, but get your monies worth and then maybe find somewhere else to do it. They are just jealous.

  • I would keep going and finish the term out & maybe change swim centres for the next term. In all honesty though, whenever I look at other mums at the pool, it’s in sheer jealousy that I’m too overweight to look good in a swimsuit, so rather than be intimidated by them, be proud as they are probably just jealous of you.

  • If you feel uncomfortable try looking for a new group but I’ll continue with lessons it’s great teaching at such a young age, good luck.

  • ignore them, swimming groups turn over quickly so new people will come and go. If uncomfortable look for other classes in your area.

  • Continue! Please! Swimming lessons are a time for you to bond with your little one. If you actually enjoy the lessons, don’t let other people make you feel self conscious – after all, you’re not doing it to bond with THEM! Good luck!

  • I wouldn’t worry about them. Swimming lessons are great for your little one.

  • I’ve found that at our daughter’s lessons that it just seems what all of the mums do. Ignore them and focus on enjoying the time with your little one. Our daughter has been having lessons since March (so 8 months of lessons soon) and there is only one mum from the original group still there – the rest either changed classes or stopped coming and new people have also been and gone in that time.

  • If it’s only for a short lesson a week, then try to ignore them. It’s never really too early to start with swimming lessons and it could save your childs life someday

  • Suck it up, but if you are really uncomfy, find somewhere that is more inviting-= dont let them put you off though!

  • If they are making you feel uncomfortable, then consider changing your lesson times or go somewhere else where there are friendly mums.

  • I’d just ignore it, swimming is a valuable tool for bub to learn and don’t let others stop you from doing that

  • Are you a little bit shy?I am and it is very hard to do what you are doing but stick to it and eventually you will get to know the other people .Smile and say halloe to people Good luck
