Hello!

My daughter will be going to school next year and is really excited. However, I am nervous because she has issues with her speech. She talks with a lisp and doesn’t say her “s”s should I be worried and get a plan for speech therapy now before school or should I wait until she goes to school?

  • I have a son who is about to start school next year, he is not quite 5 at the moment and he has similar pronounciation issues with the “sh” & “th” and often the “s” sounds. A good little test is to ask them to say the word, break it down for them “sh””ow” and emphasise the sounds, get them to repeat it and see if they can.

  • If you are concerned then get her assessed by a professional. My eldest had speech problems where he spoke so fast you couldn’t understand him & it took till he was an adult for it to go away. All we could do was to remind him to slow down as he talked, even now at 22 he has a slight lisp but it will always be there & no amount of therapy will fix it. My youngest did not speak till he was 3 due to being deaf as a baby until he was 18 months old so I found a preschool with a director who had been a school teacher & they also had early childhood teachers working there. They worked with him intensely 5 days a week & by age 4 he could hold a conversation with an adult & had the vocabulary of an adult. All it cost me was day-care fees without having to pay for a therapist, it was just a matter of working with him each day. He was ready to go school by age 4 & 1/2 but reading was still a problem & it is common with kids who had hearing difficulties as babies.
Many kids have problems with certain sounds & S is one of them as is the combination of some such as TR & FR, if you look at their speech development from baby stage you will be able to see which letters are hard to form. Babies usually say Daddy before they can say Mummy because M is hard to form at that age since the muscles in the tongue & mouth are not able to do it yet. How many times did the word TRUCK come out as something else, happened a lot with my sons lol.
Every child is different & only a professional can say if they need some assistance for it.

  • I had a lisp when I was younger and my mum took me to a speech theraspt and I’m now 37yrs old and it does go over the years I still have it a little but not as bad it sounds funny when I say the letter S lol good luck she will be fine.

  • To put your mind at rest, make an appointment. Sounds like you are worried and a speech therapist could make an assessment.

  • Visit a speech pathologist and have an evaluation done of your child. My youngest daughter did speech therapy before attending school and the activities were fun fir her to do.

  • No idea but I hope other mums can give you the answers you need.

  • Never had a problem with my two but do know of others and my advice is before school starts is better.

  • I put both of my children into speech therapy before they started school. It’s much easier to attend appointments without having to take kids out of school and most schools don’t have the funding for help with speech.

  • Our son stuttered and we got him into speech therapy before school. We did 6 sessions and he was ‘cured’!
We have done more speech therapy since then for a lisp, the sessions were ok. We were told to use the an App on our iphone called Articulation Station (icon is a bee). The kids loved it and it helped a lot.
Some things come with age but I think it’s worth while having a couple of visits to get some tools and worksheets to be able to use at home. Including teaching the parents how to properly deal with it.

  • I would say if there was an issue kindy would’ve picked up on it & recommended she be assessed. This is how I found out my first child needed speech. If her lisp is very pronounced maybe she would benefit from some speech & get it done before she gets to school

  • If you’re worried, definitely get a professional assessment. Even if they feel she’s on track, it will make you feel better.

  • my nephew has speech problems and my sister waited till he started school- his first school was useless called it all behavioural and he fell far behind. His second school has a built in speech therapy system and he is flourishing but i still think he would of benefited alot more from help prior to schooL!!

  • My son had intermittent hearing loss & his speech needed help prior to starting school. I was pleased we started before the school year as he would have had more difficulty adjusting with after school therapy as well as school.
