Hello!

My 4 month old son has begun to bite me while breast feeding. It is excruciatingly painful. Worst part is that regardless of my response, he seems to find it amusing. I do not want to stop breast feeding but I’m nervous as to what damage he may cause. Any suggestions for getting him to stop biting?

  • They do stop, but it can be awful while they learn about biting. I ended up with an infected bite with my 3rd child which was absolutely excruciating when she fed.

  • A midwife told me to say no firmly and take the boob away

  • Its just a phase, they do move on and Ive never spoken to a mum who ever had any lasting damage, but yes it hurts!

  • My opinion is to pull bub off your boob everytime bub bites. It may take a couple of day but bub will learn.

  • I would take him off everytime he bites and make him wait for a feed, he will learn

  • I kept saying no and taking him off. He used to laugh. I just kept taking him off until he stopped biting.

  • I took my baby off boob when she bite me and said no! if she kept bitting I removed her and she got the answer. biting no boob, no bitting = boob

  • I breastfed my son till he was nearly 3 and he started biting very early on to.
I found very sternly saying no and taking him off the breast and place him on his play mat then go back to him 5-10 minutes later and try again.
I did this 5 times and he never did it again after that, you seem very focused on feeding him as I was so just remember to be strict with it and to just keep taking him off.
    Good luck

  • Take him straight off the boob and then tell him that if he does it again he will not get get to drink from it anymore. I feel for you as my son did it and nearly bit it off lol. Never again thank goodness.

  • everytime he bites, take him off and tell him no

  • have you found anything that works

  • You should try stay as calm as possible, less reaction the better and unlatch him and firmly say no each time. They soon learn that it’s no fun any more and stop. Hope that helps

  • there are some good comments here

  • My son was the same, I know how much it hurts. Every time he does it you need to pull him away and say no, don’t put him straight back on. Wait a minute without giving him eye contact. Then put him back on if he does it again take him off again. He is responding to your facial responses. So try not to look at him. Hopefully he will learn quickly that its a no no. Stick with breastfeeding though I continued feeding my son until he was 4. It gets easier and quicker as well as less painful.

  • just say NO firmly every time and pull him away for a sec and then put him back on it

  • You will have to say no when he bites down

  • Try not to react like jump or scream really hard I know it hurt but try n then just take him off and ignore for a little while. Worked for my boy. Hope it does for u best of luck.

  • Ouch! 4 months is young but hopefully he will comprehend a firm NO. Best of luck.

  • Express for a while and put him on the bottle when he does it. Saying No! and taking him off is the only way I know of.

  • Hi Jacqueline, my kids did that to me once in a while, usually when they were falling asleep.
I used to say NO, sternly & generally they let go!.. sometimes they’d bite down harder then id give them a small tap on the bum (which they wouldnt feel anyway due to theyr nappy, but the noise was enough to make them let go!.
