  • In general, toddlers are at an age where they are more interested and aware of the world and licking things is one way they make sense of it. Licking objects is a way for them to receive sensory information about taste and texture.
Oral sensory seeking behaviour, or mouthing items, is a normal behaviour in babies and infants. They use sucking to help to calm themselves and self soothe. This self-soothing can also be called self-regulation.
With other words, it’s rather normal for their developmental stage.
Punishing a child for their developmental stage would of course be absurd.
When it bothers you you could use distraction, chewy toys, offer sensory play and you can still tell gentle but firm “we don’t lick things”, without giving it too much attention.

  • Understanding child development means this is actually quite normal. Sensory motor period. Often hands in mouth.
However if excessive just put in time to taking hands out of their mouth, no yelling or it’s bad. Just be firm and consistent. Make it fun too, hands out in a nice voice.
    Do they have painful gums?
Be consistent. Hands down, it will change. Takes time.

  • Do the same back to her, she won’t think it is as funny then,

  • there are some good comments here

  • i would give her warnings and punishment if she doesnt listen. Heartache yes but being stern is very important

  • Did you have any luck?

  • lots of hand wipes but definitely would discourage wiping her hands on others

  • How is she going? As most have said, most likely a phase and she will grow out of it.

  • how did you go? :)

  • Its just a phase that she is going through, hope it pass’s soon :)

  • Hope did you go with stopping her?

  • Good luck with making her stop

  • I agree it’s just a stage but my little one went through this I just told her it was yucky and she shouldn’t do it. She stopped after a while.

  • She is only two… The world is such an exciting and stimulating place. But rest assured, she probably won’t be doing this at 20 years old. Just encourage her to use a baby wipe or a cloth. The other thing is, kids at this age are often teething so they tend to out their hands in their mouths and dribble.

  • It is just a stage of learning about their world and will pass

  • I think she might be learning, different tastes and textures and she interested in them, hopefully its just a little faze that she is going through and will stop soon.

  • Gross it is but I’m sure that it is just a stage she is going through, offer her a small reward if she stops doing it each time you ask her

  • Kids do some strange things sometimes, i hope this phase doesn’t last too long for you.

  • I would suggest activities that keep her hands busy – play dough, puzzles, drawing, threading etc. if she is using her fingers she can’t be licking them

  • its all part of discovering this whole new world.
