Hello!

“I need help! Does anyone have suggestion on how to stop a 13 month old from smacking in the face? She does it every time she’s picked up, regardless of who it is she will hit them. She thinks no is a pretty funny word at the moment & just does it again. Thank you all in advance x” Any tips for a 13 month old smacking people?

  • It might not be the most popular opinion but any time one of my kids has smacked me I’ve smacked them back. It discourages them pretty quickly.

  • i would Just return Bub to the floor with a stern No each time, soon enough they will learn that this sort of behaviour will lose them cuddles and privileges, do not smack back unless you want to teach them Violence is ok.

  • I agree with shelley shelley my daughter did the same thing and reacting made it worse, saying no also made her do it more

  • My daughter used to do this so I just started ignoring her when she did it and eventually it stopped. Maybe an attention thing.. Good luck

  • I find if you just anticipate that the slap will happen (as you say it happens everytime someone picks her up) just be ready to grab the hand and gently put it back down and continue to say NO sternly, if bub continues to slap then put her down and explain why. “if you smack me I will not hold you” be consistent and bub will soon learn that if they slap they will be put down. my 14 month old also thinks NO is a hilarious word but over time she is listening now and this has only just started happening the last few weeks.
    good luck

  • Put your hand up and say No…sternly…everytime. if you get hurt say Ouch and look sad so they know its not a fun happy thing to be doing. Never smack back. Good luck

  • Simply try and be very stern, smacking is not good in my opinion!

  • Ah ha I have all this to look forward to again! I do believe it is just a phase they go through, often the more attention you draw to a behaviour the more it persists

  • Hope this has been resolved for you. It a phrase kids go through. Defiant mode!

  • It is a phase, mine did it too. I would grab her hand when I saw it coming and if she got me always say ‘ouch, that hurt mummy’ and put her down.

  • how did you end going?

  • Hope you managed to find the answer you were looking for.

  • What did you end up doing?

  • How did you get it to stop?

  • I hope you found some answers that help you

  • Some great responses – did any help?

  • Tell her you will not pick her up anymore if she does that.

  • A stern no and put her straight back down. Let her sit there for 30 seconds and the try again.

  • a very firm no and stern look, also tell her softly and gently put her hand on your face

  • That’s really naughty but kids do these things. Jus b ready to block lol
