Hello!

I’m about to go on a trip overseas with my 4 young children (6,5,3,1) I just wondered if anyone has great tips for the adventure we are going on… how to keep the children happy and entertained and if people actually survived traveling with multiplied children. Also some advice on how to prevent/treat sore ears from flying. Thank you so much.

  • Yep, agree with you, Rachel Craigh

  • Well this timely! I leave for Canada tomorrow morning! (With a 1 & 3 year old!). This is the second time to canada for the 3 year old- this is all good stuff, but be wary of small piece toys- if they fall down and the kids can’t find them they can go a bit mental. Use the stewardesses! If they ask if they can take the kids for you- say YES! Even if it’s for 5 min, that little break makes a massive difference in kiddie attitude

  • Take things like books, IPad, colouring book & pencils. Things that are flat/small & easy to pack up & carry around. Also if the kids have a favourite toy/doll that makes them feel safe have them carry it as it can be a bit daunting for them. . To help with ears things like lollies/something to suck or chew on & dummy or bottle for little ones. Good luck

  • Thanks ladies I’ll take it all in and hopefully all goes well… we are flying to Germany so it is a very long trip… I think you all just made a bit easier

  • As every one said activities and snacks. We fly/travel a lot with 2yr old twins & 5yr old and have had several people comment that it’s the parents attitude that makes a difference, so don’t stress if they’re not perfectly behaved. If it’s a long flight I’d try and book a seat for your 1 year old. They’re too big for a bassinet & sitting on your knee for 8hrs+ can be tiring. Also night flights can be great as the kids usually pass out in their seats.

  • Very brave! Good luck.

  • Suck a hard lolly on take off and landing will prevent sore ears. If still breast feeding put the child on the breast at that time.

  • I agree with all posts. Activities, snacks etc. I would add an extra set of clothes for each of you, Panadol, Nurofen, phenergan (if you normally give it to your kids). Also cardigans/jumpers as it can be cold in the plane. If you’re getting a bassinet for your 1 year old take your own wrap/sheet and blanket. They don’t always provide. Also make sure you order the kids meals with your airline. Enjoy your trip. We’ve travelled with our kids many times and it is a wonderful experience!

  • Flying is the only time we let our kids have chewing gum (they are a little older than 1 & 3) but we also use a good old chupa chup too.
As for entertainment – don’t count on sleep!! Even if its a late flight.
You just need activities- so many good ideas already.

  • Also if the 1 yr old is still breast/bottle feeding that will help the ears

  • For the ears on the plane, lollies to suck for the bigger children on takeoff and landing and for the little ones a bottle to suck on. we used to take tiny wrapped parcels for tthe children to open through the trip (if they were good) cheap games, colouring etc. or music for them to listen to . the more tense you are the worse they get so try and relax! good luck!

  • My son is only 5 months old and been to New Zealand and back and up to Central Queensland and to help with his ears I just made sure he was either having a bottle on take off and sucking his dummy on the way down and he did not sook or scream once. They just need to be sucking on something

  • I pods if you have them. Magic markers the ones that change colour when the kids use the white one. A couple of sarongs or ask for extra blankets, I use these to put over the seats to make like a tent when the kids sleep so when the flight attendants turn the lights on it does not wake them up. Snacks lots of them. Chewy lollies 30 min before decent will help with ears. Shoes that are very easy to get on and off (makes going to the toilet that 2563 times a lot easier on the plane) disposable baby change mats, too place under baby when changing them.

  • Lollipops or dummy for take off and landing

  • We just got back from a trip to Thailand with 3 kids under 5! We survived and it was actually easier than I expected! I had a backpack with lots of activity stuff in it eg. Stickers books, pencils, matchbox cars, books etc and loads if snacks! My biggest savior was the tablet I bought on grays on line the week before, I put loads of kids apps and movies and they lived it! That was always my back up when nothing else worked!! Good luck and have fun! It was our first family trip and it was awesome!!!

  • ipad filled with movies, games and headphones to go wit it as the younger. chn may wake during. the night it will. b handy for u and the little chn as they can play games without wakin other people. .lots of sticker books and activity but make sure u dont give it all out at once. as for the ears…chewy lolly help when at take off and landing. but for the 1 year old I would water in a normal bottle for the play and drink from so they grt distracted and panadol for taking and landing helps too

  • Lots of snacks and paper and pencils and activities. For ears I traveled when my daughter was 14months we have her her bottle so she was sucking all the time on takes of and landing. So anything they can suck or chew. If they have dummies and let them take one of their favorite things.

  • your one brave mum! lots of colours, portable dvd, cards, books, sometimes you can still by mini travel game sets. Make sure you have lots of lollies or small snacks the kids can eat for boredom and for take off/ landing as this will help with their ears. Good luck!

  • I have packed a travel bag for each of my kids with colouring in, cards, new toys (barbie, match box cars, Lego) books, blanket, etc to keep them amused when they get board of watching in flight movies. I also bought travel ear plugs from chemist warehouse for kids to help with take off and landing.
