Hello!

We currently rent and our place that we live in now has No air conditioning what so ever as summer nearly approaching I know that a Fan will help a little but not to the extent of over all coolness. Any suggestions of any good cooling systems that work and that not too expensive.

  • Oh i definitely feel for you. Summer in Australia can be brutal and can be terrible for people with health conditions too. Not sure which state you are in Australia but some rental agreements now require landlords to have bare minimum things in the house like heating. Perhaps speak to your agent?

  • I’m sorry you’re in this position. It really should be a rule that rentals need at least one air con unit in the home, Spring as already been brutal in QLD and we aren’t even in Summer yet.
I like the fans that are the tower design. I have found they are cooler and spread the air faster.

  • I would suggest looking around for a portable air conditioner. I had one once when I was living in a caravan on my parent’s property in Queensland. It actually did a remarkably good job. The only hitch is that you will need to have a window or something to hang a hose out of.

  • Have you asked the property manager to pop a request in to the owner? You may be pleasantly surprised. Im a Property Manager and this is one of the first things I suggest to owners to make the house more attractive to tenants. I am yet to have one say no..

  • Ha ha so in this situation as well and been reviewing all sorts of suggestions…I laughed today as I was on the Choice review website and one of the best fans they recommend is the Big W rotating one for $17! Not to noisy and recommended for people with air conditioning that want to reduce their energy consumption. They were saying turning on a fan first, will usually give you another five degrees before you ‘need’ to turn on the air conditioning.

  • I would open all the windows and doors very early in the morning with a fan (overnight if you can) to cool the house off and then close up before the day starts to heat up too much. This helps for a few hours but is does depend on your climate.

  • Aw bless, that’s suffering.
We are renters too and our first rented house in Sydney also didn’t have an air conditioning system. Now this house was build below street level and was on the edge of the reserve with many trees around us, which caused shade and a naturally cooler temperature; which made it bearable. But we did buy a portable air conditioner for the bedrooms. Now a days you really have small mini air coolers for a very reasonable price

  • Have you even asked the real estate if the owners could give you air conditioning even if it’s just the family room where you use it the most.

  • I think that air conditioning in Australia is a necessity and not a want. I can’t imagine life without my air conditioner at home. My husband and I have a few rental properties and we made sure all of them have adequate cooling and heating. For landlords, it’s a tax deduction.
