To be honest, sitting on the potty just for fun is already a start

We were told to start around 7 months (holding the child in their potty seat). It was great our son would do a number 2 in the potty twice a day, no more poo nappies. He would occasionally do a wee in the potty as well. This is termed toilet timing, as supposed to toilet training but it is all part of the same process.

I started mine at around 18 months. My boy was day dry by 20 months, my girl was not much older, but she took much longer to be night time dry. I think my mistake was putting nappies on her for so long, recommended until they began having dry nappies. She got to age 4, still in night time nappies, when I just decided to stop them. I got to the last nappy in the box and said that’s it! She was pretty much dry from then on You just have to experiment and see how you go.

It’s important to know the different between toilet training and toilet timing – Children can be taken at a ‘time’ that they would usually need to go, but the training part requires them to be mentally at the right stage, as well as physically able to hold on and know the signs themselves. When they are ready, it will happen. The more relaxed you are, the better! I wouldn’t start seriously until they can recognise they are wet/soiled and tell you, and have some language – which is usually after 2 years. Thicker training pants (which hold one wee) worked wonders for my boy and gave me peace of mind when out. Try brands such as blueberry undies, and close parent ‘pop in’

I started at around 2. And still with a lot of failures in the way!

I had a friend with three boys. She told me 27 months was perfect for boys and only took a week or so. I found the same. Wait until winter is over. No point in having accidents with all that clothing on. I know a mum who claimed to have potty trained her 9 month old. I couldn’t see the point. Maybe she trained herself to anticipate.

I tried potty trining my daughter just before her second birthday. Didn’t work. My advice is try but don’t force it. We have taken a break at the moment and we’ll try again in a few weeks.

We didn’t start until well after 2. I think it was closer to 3 for my first but me second got it much much earlier.
