Hello!

I only allow my daughter to use a dummy for bed on the advice of a speech pathologist. I was hoping to wean her off it soon but I read it is not recommended if you are about to have a major change ie moving house, new baby. She will be 20 mths when her baby sibling will be born. She has also had a lot of illnesses this year and the dummy has been a big comfort.

  • The first at 3 years and it was exhausting but the others I never introduced them to a dummy

  • It all depends on when you can get it off them! Some are easy and some take time

  • My brother threw his in the toilet but he was really sick at the time so she gave him a spare one she had. The 2nd time he did it our Dad was in hospital so he was told if he did it again – no more dummy. When he did it again a few days later it disappeared and he wasn’t given another one. He was given a small blanket to cuddle which he never put in his mouth as far as my parents knew. He gradually gave up taking it to bed and just played with it – wrapped up a toy dog.
Dummies are better than finger sucking with some little ones. I know a lady who as a toddler sucked her middle 3 fingers. It took forever to break her of the habit. They tried painting special bitter stuff on her finger nails, even taking them out of her mouth when she was asleep but she put them back in while sound asleep. They tried mittens – that didn’t stop her. She had a very happy childhood so we don’t know why she did it. She stopped during it during the day around the time she started pre-school but still did it at night for awhile. She pushed her jaw and teeth out of alignment. She had to have bands on her teeth. They corrected her jaw with equipment she had to wear at night. Fortunately she didn’t have to have surgery.

  • It depends on the child. One of mine left it for Father Christmas and one for the Easter Bunny. They never got upset and never looked for it again.

  • Our son weaned himself off his own dummy. We didn’t let him go to sleep with it so eventually he didn’t need it. He’s 8 months old and doesn’t use a dummy very much at all now.

  • My kids wouldn’t take a dummy, so I didn’t need to wean

  • You can always try the dummy fairy but she might be a bit young to understand? I’ve seen kids at 3 and 4 still walking around with a dummy, it’s totally up to you if you think the time was right.

  • I am still trying!!! My 3.5 year old just won’t give it up, I am hopeful that we will be rid of it before 4!!!

  • Only my youngest stuck with a dummy. I tried to wean her off totally at Christmas one year but she wouldn’t have a bar of it. She wasn’t giving her dummy to Santa. But on her 3rd birthday she says I am a big girl and threw it in the trash. And that was it.

  • The day he turned 3. We had been talking about the dummy fairy coming to take his dummies for the babies that need them. He picked a present and then that was that. It was hard for a few nights but he doesn’t ask anymore.

  • My 2 kids didn’t have a dummy. My first born sucked his thumb tho. That habit broke when he cut his thumb, it was too sore to suck and that was that

  • Always had in my mind that I’d stop when she dd was 2 years but at 21 months I just took it away. Even though I was only giving it to her at sleep time, I actually forgot it when we went on an outing recently and refused to buy another one. She winged a little but then fell asleep without it. So I stopped giving it to her. It’s been 4 days and she’ll ocassionally ask for it but I just say it’s gone and no more fuss.
I think I had more of a connection to it than she did.

  • My son self weaned at 6 months. He went from using it to settle himself to sleep to all of a sudden refusing it and demanding to be fed to sleep.

  • My daughter was 3 she only used it for bed. She lost it one day and we couldn’t find it that night. She was totally fine with it when we explained that she lost it and if she can’t find it there is no more dummy. She hasn’t asked for it since

  • We weaned our 3yrold off his dummy at 3. We gave it to the easter bunny. We had alot of big changes. We sold our house, moved in with my parents and then moved into our new house so decided to wait till we were settled. We went camping for the weekend and found because we were in a different environment he gave it up quite easily. He asks for our occasionally but I just explain to him what happened and he is ok with it.

  • My eldest was 18months
Second was 12 months and 3rd is 12 months and still has one for sleeping

  • My little girl gave her Dummies to Santa for the baby reindeer. She put them all out on Christmas Eve with the cookies and carrots for Santa and she had asked Santa Barbara for a purple Elephant. This was when she was about 2 and a 1/2.
She did give up her bottle quite a while before this and had changed to a cup but lien ended up really sick in hospital. While she was there they couldn’t get her to take in any fluid, the nurse suggested giving her a bottle, I was really worried about this as we had weaned her, but as soon as she was home from hospital she stopped the bottle without any problems.

  • My first weaned herself around 16 months after she weaned from the breast but my second was bottle fed and didn’t give up her dummy till she was almost 3. We had to go slowly and start with not having it during the day while awake and then we moved on to naps and finally bed time.

  • I weaned my daughter off the dummy at 18 months, mainly because I noticed she didn’t want it when she was upset anymore so I felt that she was ready. I got her to gather her dummies and place them in a bag. We tied them to a tree to give to the “Dummy fairy” in exchange for something more grown up. The next morning the fairy had swapped the dummies for a baby doll. She never worried about them again. I will be using the same way with my son however I can honestly say that at 15 months I know he won’t be ready to give it up at 18 months so I will play it by ear. Hope this helps you.

  • I think this depends on the child and other factors. I never had dummies for my little kids. I tried with one of them and bubs just kept spitting it out so I did not persist and he was fine!
