Hello!

Our daughter is two next month and already seems close to being able to scale out of her cot. She’s the first of our children to try this trick and we aren’t ready for her to go in to a single bed any time soon. She’s physically tiny, our last “baby” and we can picture chaos if we move her out of the cot. I’m not sure when she’ll physically begin to climb over the cot railing, but I just imagine that once toddlers begin this trick then we have to say goodbye to the cot? What did you do when your toddler began climbing over?

  • As soon as you feel this fear i think it’s time to consider to say goodbye to the cot. We had a cot that was convertible into a toddler bed, but with my youngest and with my son they felt safer with a mattress on the floor

  • Eep it sounds like it’s inevitable soon! Mine is 2y2m and we’re currently working up the courage to take his cot side off (it converts to a toddler bed). I’m apprehensive though – similar to you i know it will bring chaos! But yeah I think if your little one is scaling the sides then for safety reasons it’s best to farewell the cot. Good luck mumma!

  • We put our daughter in a bed when she started climbing out of her cot. She was 2. We got her a king single so she will have it for a long time.

  • My eldest was scaling and climbing out of her cot by 16months, so even though we had a single bed, I started her with her cot mattress on the ground first. After a month transitioned her to the single mattress. Once I was sure she wasn’t falling off in her sleep, that’s when we finally elevated her again. (Well past 2yrs old by that point). I know you can get bed railings, but my daughter loved to climb so I knew it would be safer to not give her something to scale.

  • 2 yrs she was in single bed

  • We went from Cot to cot size bed when our first child was about 2 and then from that to single bed not long after – around 28 months old. We had no issues with her getting out of bed – made a good routine of tucking in, reading a book and then close eyes to sleep

  • My daughter is 2.5 years old and still in a cot. I’m waiting for the day when she starts climbing out of it to change her to a big girl bed. She is tall too so she might have to change before that day just for some space! I’ve heard when you change to a big bed to tell them what is happening days before so they aren’t scared and also to put the new bed in the same spot as the cot so it isn’t to much big change for them.

  • Our son got his big bed on his 2nd birtday (we needed cot for our daughter) . It took a week for him to used to it and stop coming to our bed 10 times a night. Each night we all sitting in his room, reading books (2) ,goodnight kissess and my husband will lay down with him until he is asleep (10min or so). When my husband is working i can’t lay down with my son as my daughter need my attendance and he is perfectly fine to fall asleep by himself. He fell off on floor 2 or 3 times. I used extra doona on the floor for a month. Its a big step but i believe it was good. The only problem is with daynaps as baby is more mobile.

  • My daughter was 20 months old when she first tried getting out of her cot. I didn’t give her the opportunity to keep doing it. We moved her to her bed that night and she’s been in it with no issues ever since
