Hello!

Our son is 6 and started prep this year. He currently does swimming once a week after school during spring and summer. He doesn’t play a weekend sport and I’m unsure when we will start this. We have 3 children under 6 and would like them all to choose an activity they enjoy, but we also don’t want to be tied down all year round due to sporting commitments. Winter sport is what I grew up with, playing netball while my brothers did soccer, for 6 months of the year, so I can picture what it might look like for our family, but I’m hesitant to enroll our eldest in anything just yet. He also hasn’t asked or expressed any interest in an extracurricular activity and I don’t want to force this upon him, but I do envision an active healthy lifestyle for my children. What age did your children join a team sport or engage in an activity outside school?

  • My children all done afternoon activities prior to starting school, then continued the start of kindergarten and we found they were getting far too tired. So we started again in year 1 doing one after school activity per week and a weekend sport (which was season dependant, so not all year round) :)

  • My kids started around 6. Try enrolling him in a one week holiday program where they try half a dozen different sports, to see what he might be interested in.

  • My son is 4 and a half and is just about to start junior cricket. It only goes for 8 weeks but he asked to play last year but was too young. I believe they will ask when they are ready

  • My kids both did swimming lessons from a very early age as we have a pool and I wanted to make sure if they fell in they would know what to do. As for other activities they both started a team sport in Kindy (so 5 turning 6) and then in year 1/2 picked up another sport (both were individual sport). I didn’t want to over commit them but also wanted them to understand the importance of being in a team and sticking with things

  • My kids started sport at 6.
They play teeball which is from October- Feb with the Xmas break so it’s not too long.
I found teeball to be a great sport because it’s not just about the one kid that scores the goal like in football soccer etc. The whole team actually has to help each other to win. Everyone gets a turn to bat and they all get a turn in the field to touch the ball. It’s a mixed sport which is great because my twins also play now. My son is now 12 and still plays but baseball and this in my twins 4th yr playing. We love it

  • My daughter started swimming lessons in Year 1 and recorder lessons. Just that. One hour of swimming and half an hour of recorder lessons. No team sports for her. She’s never been interested. And they ask indeed for a lot of commitment.
