Hello!

Michelle has messaged us asking: “at what age do most toddlers stop having day sleeps? My 19month old never goes down without a LONG fight, which results in a frustrated mummy and a distraught son. Often I give up (after an hour) and let him up. He normally goes to bed at 7.30 but at this age, and with these fights, is it better to put him down earlier and skip the day sleep? Or is it my routine that’s out? I’m also considering a toddler bed but he doesn’t always sleep through either… Sigh. Please help!”

  • My eldest son was the same. At 18 months he dropped his day sleep but would be in bed for 5:30. That really worked For us and he would sleep Ewan through. He is 6 now and his bedtime is still only 7

  • Great! There are really very interesting comments on this!

  • I really think it all varies from baby to baby!

  • My 19 month old gets up at 6.15am and goes to bed at 6.15pm ( a version of Tizzie Hall’s Save Our Sleep 7-7 routine), he sleeps for 2 hours from 10am-12noon.

  • Our DD was about 2 years old.

  • It depends upon the child. One of our daughters stopped every day naps around 18mths and fully around 2 years. Our youngest, 27mths, still naps regularly but not every day, maybe 4-5 times a week. We do find their day naps are taken more easily if we put them down a little later as they got older and the naps got shorter. We never let them sleep past 3:30pm. Our daughters go to bed at 7pm and get up around 6:30am.

  • I’m hoping no time before 3 – the day bps is my sanity saver!! My son is 26 months and still sleeps 2 to : hours during the day

  • Hope you managed to find the answer you were looking for.

  • When and did you stop with the day sleeps?

  • 3 years of age for our first daughter

  • Mine stopped day sleep in 3 year old kinder – so not long after she had turned 3.

  • Every child is different with this, there is no set age. You will just have to try and read her signs and see what happens if you try and cut the day sleep out.

  • As Lovi suggested, let her lead you. That’s what I did with my kids

  • All kids are different. My daughter stopped having day sleeps around 18 months. My son is 2.5 and will still have occasional day sleeps, it depends how well he slept the night before.

  • I’d say 2 to stop afternoon naps. But they go back to a nap when they start kindy again

  • they will let you know when they are ready

  • Both my boys stopped having day sleeps around 2. The only saving grace is knowing they’ll go to bed earlier! I never tried to make my boys have naps once they didn’t show signs of being tired and needing one.

  • by the time my daughter turned 3 years old is when she stopped having day naps

  • I’m hoping my 21/2 old keeps her day sleeps for awhile, she has started to rebel, I think it is an individual thing and if they are happy to sleep I’d let them :)

  • every child is different they will let you know when they don’t want to sleep any more.
