What age for mobile phone?

Hello!

My son is 9 years old nearly 10 and he is begging me to get a mobile phone. I know many of his friends have phones that they mainly use to play games etc but also some have small phone packages to call home because of the lack of pay phones. I think that he is still too young for a phone but maybe I’m just old fashioned. Do you think this is too young for a phone? Does your child around this age or younger have a phone? What restrictions or options are there out there for a mobile phone for this age group?

I received my first phone at 13, when I started high school, however Its so hard with the increasing demand of technology use these days. There are cheap, very basic phones you can purchase to use as means on contact and games only, if that is your main concern.. I think If your worried about the bill, stick to Pre-paid, let him know you’ll get him one recharge a month, & if he goes over/uses it before hand, he’ll just have to wait..

I do think it is a young age to get a phone. I guess it’s the trend these days. but everyone has different opinions.

this topic scares me…. lol… i got one when i was 15 but that was 12 years ago and phones were very different. Although if he is going to be responsible with it then maybe you can do a trial run?

My son is 9 at the end of the year and I don’t trust him with a phone. I can just imagine the bills lol. It would make life easier as his father and I are separated and he goes to his fathers house every second weekend and his father calls once a fortnight. I think I will try and hold out until high school. The reason that I will probably be forced to get him one in year 6 is that I work full time and am on my own and want to know that he is safe.
