Hello!

I’m 34 and after living overseas for some years I don’t have much money in my superannuation fund and am getting worried about the future. As I’m currently home with two young kids and won’t be back to work for another year or two, I’m not sure if I should try to find some money to put into my super fund. Do any other mums who aren’t working try to put a little bit of money into their funds?

  • Very good question. Whenever super comes up I think of how super funds lost so much money in GFC. People who had retired had to go back to work. So make sure you are happy with how the fund invests your money in terms of risk on share market versus, or opt for your own risk free investment like a term deposit.

  • maybe add $10 a week. its better than nothing and not enough to break the bank

  • I contribute to my super so when im off for the next yr with my dd at least I have made some contributions

  • I worry about this to, I might look into it as well!

  • Money is usually tight when living on one wage, we never topped up my super until I started working part time.

  • I am always thinking about mine as I have not worked now for 3 and a half years. Now I have had my 3 kids and will return to work soon. I hope I can make it up.

  • Funnily enough I thought of this a week or so ago (at 3am, of course). I rang my super fund, and they said if I get some extra cash here and there I can put it in. It does not have to be a set amount. Mine allow bpay, internet transfer or post office payments, so I would suggest give yours a call.

  • It really is worrying and has also crossed my mind as I will be out of work for at least another 3 years now

  • You can get some professional advice from your bank. They might work out a plan for you since you are not working.

  • This is a great question as I’ve never thought about this before I’ve been a stay at home mum for 7years an I’ve never done anything with mine now after reading this I think I might look into it a bit more.
