Hello!

our family usually do everyone bring a share plate for Xmas lunch, however this leads to some people bringing huge lovingly prepared dishes and others bringing the worlds tiniest salad in a packet. this year i suggested we all contribute financially and the host (my sister) buys everything (as she always has an issue with what someone has brought) she has taken this on board i wonder if anyone else has successfully done this?

  • You could create a list of that what you wnat to eat together and divide it between the participants. You could calculate what each has paid and make it equal.

  • Everyone comes here and I cook and buy everything.
Ive always done this and really love it.

  • We usually bring a plate and some alcohol.

  • Always either bring a plate or contribute to something (like doing all the set up and then cleaning up), but have never contributed money other than the one time we went out for Christmas Lunch.

  • We divvy up who will bring what do that there isn’t an uneven burden on people. Alchohol wnd any other drinks are brought by the individuals

  • The whole point with our Christmas bring a plate is some bring lots some bring nothing but we always have plenty to eat and everyone knows it’s not going to change.

  • I love to cook/bake – so am always happy to bring homemade treat. Plus I then check with the host what else I can bring e.g. salad, dip/nibbles, meat

  • Whatever is convenient for people – I am usually asked to bring some salad dishes as we grow our own salad foods and everyone likes them but I have also been happy to contribute some dollars

  • I bring a couple of plates, but I’d also be happy to contribute money instead,

  • My inlaws are very set on what is served Christmas day. Some years we have potioned out what people have to bring to help out and this year (2020) they paid for it all and if you wanted anything additional/different you catered for it.

  • It’s always bring a plate but the host works out what’s needed and tells everyone what they’re bringing.

  • I always host Christmas at my house and we all chip in abit but I’m happy to pay for it on my own

  • Bringing a contribution of food is always helpful to the person putting on Christmas.

  • We always have everyone bring a plate. We ask each person what dish they would like to bring beforehand so that we do not have too many duplicates of any food item. If they offer to bring a small inexpensive and non time consuming item, we nicely suggest that they bring something else as well. Some people are very good at making certain things and are thrilled to be asked to make it for the Christmas celebration and that we appreciate their skill. However, they have the option of declining to make the item and bring something else instead. A little bit of tact goes a long way in sorting out the menu so everyone is happy and has an enjoyable feast.

  • The host supplies the meats, guests bring something agreed upon – usually salads, desserts or both.

  • We normally cater the bulk and divvy out specific items and make it clear how many to cater for.

I would be fine with financial but others might be funny about it. But I think it is a good idea to put it to the table for discussion re next year and see what people say.

Usually our issue at Xmas is way too much food!

  • We’ve done “bring a plate”, being very specific about what to bring. Haven’t done the financial contribution, but I wouldn’t be offended if it was suggested.

  • Everyone is assigned a food group and brings a plate, like vegetables , meat, desserts, nibbles it works well

  • We ended up making individual portions for everyone to avoid any sharing.

  • We prefer to bring a plate designated by the host.
