Any toy that encourages fine and gross motor skills and stimulates learning and the senses

Anything that promotes fine motor skills would be a good choice. Perhaps a shape sorter.

yeah that age they are happy to amuse their self but things that make noise or light up are usually entertainment enough

Fisher price, Leap Frog has some good quality toys, musical laptops or telephones to hold. Even push cars etc.
