Hello!

If you don’t like your child’s school friends, do you do or say anything?

  • Probably say nothing unless they are very unsafe.

  • Thank you for all your thoughtful answers. Fortunately my daughter has great friends now.

  • depends on the reason you don’t like them. if they are little thugs/criminals etc and you are worried for your child then you say/do something. If you just don’t like them, then say nothing. they are your childs friends and they have to make their own friends and their own choices

  • I’ve wondered this as well. To a large extent I’ve realized I can do nothing … so it is all really academic. They will see each other at school, can be made to work together by teachers (I suppose I couldn’t intervene but haven’t), and nothing can really stop them interacting if they wish. In fact it could make it worse! Yet I’m still the one who ferries around to various out of school arrangements. I usually do the ones I like the sound of, but miss others. So perhaps “silently” I am filtering out-of-school connections without realizing it. I’m not banning the friendship, but I’m just not putting myself out to help it grow.

  • yeah i let my child navigate her friendships. they can be very hot and cold when they are young so i don’t take offense or anything as one day they are best friends forever and the next week, they hate each other lol. my daughter does get along with kids really well but the other ones play games and try to learn about power play (i’ll be your best friend IF….).

  • When they’re little, early primary, it’s not so much an issue. But as they get older, if there are good reasons for your dislike, I would say something. You don’t want your children falling in with the wrong crowd

  • Is there a particular reason for not liking the friends? May help with an answer?

  • It does depend on age and the reasons for not being keen on the friendships. Kids do change friendships over time.

  • I think it’s very difficult to decide. It depends on the age of the kids too.
