It’s a big spikey type of fruit similar to the size of a basketball. It has an overpowering smell so some countries have banned it in hotel rooms and on planes.
Durian is a fruit found in Malaysia, Singapore. It has a distinct smell and taste. It can be eaten alone or in recipes. Like haggis, black pudding and gazpacho, it is worth trying once.
Can’t say I’ve ever seen it on the supermarket shelves. Maybe try an Asian shop. If none there, you would need to find a substitute. Let’s face it, cheesecake in any flavour is a-may-zing!
The Moon Cakes and Sticky Rice are my favourite looking recipes with Durian fruit – thanks for asking the question. Reignited my interest in unusual ingredients. 🙂
Also; to add to the other answers. It is used to give flavour to sweet and savoury recipes. Some of recipes are quite unique and interesting. Worth a google search.
When I was in Malaysia everybody was talking about this durian. I remember signs in the hotel indeed not allowing you to bring durian inside, for the smell it has. I think it’s one of those fruits that you love immediately or you hate. Personally I tried it and I found it disgusting! 😉 But I had some girlfriends, Malaysian, who loved it!
Durian is a fruit found commonly in Sth East Asia and is quite on the nose. Many hotels don’t allow it to be brought into their establishment. If you can get over the smell it is worth trying.
