What is MSG supposed to actually taste like? - Mouths of Mums

Hello!

I’ve been told it makes savory things better, that it’s an enhancer like salt, and that its basically what makes meat taste good. Yet to me it doesn’t taste like anything at all, and I can’t really taste any difference when it’s been added to food. What am I supposed to get from it?

  • Hard to really describe for me personally but i would just say very similar to salt. It’s meant to draw out the flavours of your dish more. As you would salt meat etc. it’s not meant to be a flavour in itself but to help other flavours come out more. Good lucl

  • I believe it just enhances the flavour, really bringing out the salt and umami out of dishes. I watched a YouTube video of someone using it on various dishes and had a huge difference. They then used it in a sugary dessert and it was horrible, it doesn’t react well in sugary food

  • Food and meals can get an abundance of flavour from other seasonings. I season food with salt and pepper and other herbs and spices. A good flavour can indeed be obtained by adding seasoning, herbs and spices. I always felt unwell after consuming MSG which is why I avoid it when possible and ask if it is in food.

  • MSG is Monosodium Glutamate. It’s a flavour enhancer and a salt. Usually people stay away from it as it can cause headaches, tingling and makes you thirsty. There are heaps of food that have it in them mainly highly processed foods. But take away foods have it in too, like KFC, Red Rooster, McDonalds, Hungry Jacks, Guzman and Gomez etc etc. so use sparingly if you must use it at all.

  • I really do avoid msg in food because I do not like extra salt in food and meals. I find MSG adds a salty flavour to foods. When I did have MSG it left my mouth feeling dry and there was a need for water to drink due to feeling thirsty.
