Hello!

We recently got a little kitten for my son to grow up with and she has fitted to the family perfectly. However I’m finding it difficult to find a kitty litter that absorbs the mess successfully and masks the smell at the same time. We have tried crystal (doesn’t absorb urine) and clay (doesn’t hide the smell). I’m not sure what else to try. The kitten is still young to go outside to do her business so we need to find something that can do both reasonably. Any suggestions would be great!

  • I am surprised the cat goes near an area sprayed with air freshener. Carb Soda certainly helps with the odor. Put it in the middle or bottom of the tray not too high up in the kitty litter. The clumping ones are the best. The also smell less even when fresh.

  • We use the rock and roll kitty litter thing – it is easy to use and easy to clean (and safe in pregnancy)

We spray the orange spray from coles when the air is a bit gross.

  • Coles clumping cat litter is great. You can scopp out the mess daily and it lasts longer, doesnt usually start smelling unless the cat has done a lot of wees in it, but usually get about 5-6 days out of it! Cheap too.

  • there is a recylcled paper pellet one, I thought id try one week, it is brilliant, goes alt further and lasts longer, also doesn’t stink and you can use it as fertiliser (though I haven’t)

  • I used newspaper under a bucket full of nature from outside made it much easier when it was time to use the toilet outside. Never really noticed any smell unless I didn’t clean it out :)

  • We use homebrand clumping clay
seems to be the best one we found
obviously if the cat does a big poo the smell is there but it doesnt last long

  • We found the one you buy in the bucket at Pet stock is both effective and economical.

  • I used to work with cats, we put a couple of layers of news paper under a bout a 1.5 cups of clay litter & changed it daily. At home I use more litter (crystals) & change my cat’s tray every 2nd or 3rd day. The paper makes it super easy to clean & soaks up excess pee.

  • KMart sell a good one that is cheap. Just add some carb soda. You can scoop out what you need to.

  • I use a home brand clumping cat litter for my cats. It clumps together really well and I need to scoop out the soiled bit. It seems to hide the odours a bit better and one bag seems to last a really long time as the litter tray itself doesn’t get wet and need to be cleaned as often.

  • Aside from changing often and removing clumps as they appear I have found putting bi carb soda in the bottom under the litter helps absorb odours.

  • I haven’t found one that absorbs the smell. I use a combination of Woolworths Clumbping Kitty Litter and the Aldi Brand.
I remove the mess twice or more a day and find that seems to be the only way to prevent it becoming smelly.
We have had cats for over 40 years and have had to do the above all of this time.
I do find that after the clean up if you spray air freshener over the litter it helps to remove the odour quickly.
Good luck, I hope this helps a little:)
