Hello!

When breastfeeding what is the progression of solids? I know to wait two days between new foods and breastfeed first then offer food. My daughter is 6 months old and I have just started one meal a day of farex and carrot. She seems to want food all day!

  • I used raising children network for support with this and my health nurse

  • I think it was around that time. I used to go buy the hospitals blue book and saw the childhood nurse regularly so I was a bit of a robot when it came to schedules !

  • There’s some great information on parenting service sites like Karitane

  • how did it turn out?

  • I think pureed pear is a good option. Doesn’t seen to be any particular progression, each to their own really.

  • How did she end up going with her food?

  • I would just be guided by bub. She’ll tell you everything you need to know.

  • Good advice below – great the you little one eats well.

  • It sounds like she will be a good eater, I would still make sure you offer milk first.

  • Mixture or vegies or fruit

  • Websites like this one can offer some helpful tips and guidelines when it comes to the progression of solids..

  • Blend veggies up. Can’t go wrong With them

  • Mashed veggies is great :P

  • Good luck make sure you use variety of different things bubs don’t like eating the “same old” & Be Creative :-)

  • I would breastfeed my little man at about 6am then at 8am he would have farex cereal then breastfeeds whenever he wanted, then lunch would be yoghurt and piece of fruit and dinner I would have already frozen diced chicken & veggies or beef, steak, pork, fish with veggies etc, or I freshly prepare and cook savory mince with small diced veggies ;-)

  • I waited 2 days between foods but offered food first then formula

  • i never followed the “same food for a few days” rule or even breastfeed first etc. couldnt find enough evidence to back all these claims up so i went with what i wanted. ive read that initially you should give only 1 tablespoon. but honestly again dont know why. they will stop when they are full.

i did however do the foods in the morning so if any allergies or reactions it would be more likelyto pop up during theday rather than at night.

took a couple weeks initially and we were up to 3 bowls (the small bowls from target umm hold about 3/4 cup) or food! it honestly depends on what your child wants. there is no point taking away food qhen they want more. we did purees or about 2-1/2 months then introdced lumpier stuff. my soms always been a good chewer etc so progressed quickly.

and the gag reflex is normal! its babies wy of working out how to eat!

  • My kids started with Avocados (full of so many good nutrients), carrots, sweet potatoes, bananas, cauliflower, apples – sometimes mixed together, and then I started added meats – mince, chicken, etc and berries and eggs. Within a few months they were eating what we ate just in smaller doses, the only foods I avoided were nuts, and sugar . Never really bothered with Farex tastes awful and is just a filler doesn’t provide too many nutrients, offering better quality wholefood will provide them with better nutrition.

  • At 6 months she may be ready for more meals per day. When I started my son on solids (4 mths) I gave 1 teaspoon of rice cereal 3 times a day for a few days then gradually upped the amount & gradually added fruit & veg. Probably over the course of a few weeks. If she is unsettled or taking ages to get to sleep or cat napping, that is a sure sign she is ready for more!!

  • I have never heard of having to wait 2 days between introducing new foods. I have 7 children ranging in ages from 2 months to 18 years so the recommendations have changed a few times over the years, I find its best to let bub be your as all children are different. My kids were never fused on mash potato as a first food I think it was probably the texture they didn’t like, but they loved carrot pumpkin and sweet potatoes I would make up a pot of veggies and add a tablespoon of vegemite I then froze it in batches using ice Cube trays and sealed the cubes in a zip lockrd bag.
