Hello!

What’s everyone’s best “mum hack” that makes life a little easier? I love a good shortcut or clever idea that saves time (or sanity) and would love to hear what’s working for other mums!

  • I always clean my shower when I am in there having a shower. I spray it the night before with spray and wipe and mould spray on any iffy bits. I leave the bottle in the middle of the shower to remind me it’s slippery. Then I am up for the first shower and get both over and done with.

  • I discovered this one the other day when cleaning the kitchen. You know how you get those annoying, sticky, greasy marks on all the cupboards, etc that are above the stove area? Normal products generally don’t get rid of it. I rubbed a dishwashing tablet on the area, using it in the same way I would a scourer- the grease came right off and then I just sprayed with a normal cleaner and wiped.

  • Laying out a few days worth of clothes, that’s PJS, school uniforms etc so they arent trying to rush and find everything in the morning. It’s all there ready for them and they dont have to think too much about it! Its saves a lot of time in the morning especially when theyre feeling tired

  • Not sure it’s a hack but it helped me feel organised for the week if uniforms were all washed and ironed on Sunday. I also planned meals and did all the shopping for the week on Saturday, so I didn’t have the pressure to think of meals each night.

  • Also, giving my kids some independence helped make my life easier. Another mum was stunned to find that all my kids make their own school lunches in primary school. Obviously we had some rules and parental oversight, and the very youngest needed help. But letting them do things like that saved me tons of time in the long run.

  • One of my favourite mum hacks with my two girls in primary school now is to try and do all the prep work on a sunday and get that out of the way. I try to pack as much of their lunchboxes as i can for the week and just add in extra bits in the morning. It saves me so much time!

  • I definitely think it evolves as your kids get older and mine are teens but I definitely like making sure they always have a little bit of money in their bags. I get a sandwhich bag and write their name on it and keep $5-10 in their school bags, work bag, sport bags etc. it’s saved me so many times when they have forgotten ‘special’ donation days, canteen days or if I’m running late and I can message and say buy a snack and sit and wait. It’s simple but so helpful.

  • One of the best “Mum/Nanny hacks” for me with small grandchildren that I look after from time to time is keeping a dedicated “grandkid bag”. It’s a simple idea. The bag holds a few essentials — a change of clothes, wipes, a small towel, snacks, a couple of quiet toys, and maybe a favourite book or two. That way, when we are heading out for a quick errand or to the park with them, I’m not scrambling to gather things

  • Yes ChiWren the fish wand filled with shower cleaner is a good and efficient one. I keep one in the shower and fill it with 1/2 dish washing liquid and 1/2 vinegar; this works well and is cost effective. I work the walls during my shower and after rinsing I wipe it down with a window wiper, which reduces build up of mold. I keep the window wiper in hanging on a hook in the shower too

  • The best hack I ever discovered was the fish wand filled with shower cleaner being left in the bathroom. I have so much less time to do most cleaning around the house these days, and being able to do a small amount often really makes it a whole lot easier for me

  • I don’t know if you consider it a hack, for me it’s more a matter of giving myself a clue; My daughter needs medication twice a day and in the morning rush and dinner time rush I would forget at times. I now put 2 spoons on top of her lunchbox and when I get her lunchbox out the fridge before school I put some yogurt on the spoons and use one for the morning medication and one for the late afternoon medication

  • I think different things were helpful at different ages. When my kids were in primary school and had lots of activities, I found it useful to have a series of tote bags or backpacks for activities – ballet, swimming, tae kwon do – so that everything was together and I could just grab the relevant bag on the way out the door.
