Firstly it depends on the age of your children. Some food they are safe to eat at home under supervision if needed may not be a great idea in a moving vehicle of any type. In an emergency when travelling you are not always able to stop when you need to. For food the first day we always pack plenty of water (no other drinks in the car while travelling), and snacks – not salty or too sweet (too much salt can cause dehydration) and fresh sandwiches for lunch. Flasks of hot water. That way you can picnic at a picnic location or large parking bay. We usually choose somewhere with toilets. When we stop for fuel we usually use the toilets at the same time. If you take hot water and the makings you can make tea, coffee, hot chocolate or even hot soup using “cup of soup” powder in cold weather
I pack a bag for each child just like they would have for school. Fruit for fruit break (banana and grapes are good, or even oranges pre-cut into wedges, and they don’t have to eat them all at once like you would an apple. Then they have a snack box for morning tea with rice crackers, a few slices of cheese and maybe some kabana and carrot sticks. For lunch they have their own sandwich. If you don’t have a car-fridge, an ice brick in their lunch bag (or an insulated bag like the ones from Aldi) is perfect.
Muesli bars and bottles of water, we stop otherwise to eat food as both my kids get travel sickness after eating we try and walking around for 20 minutes than we’re good to go for another couple of hours
I love to eat mixed nuts, seeds and dried fruit on a long road trip. It keeps me content till I stop for lunch. Also fresh fruit such as grapes, apples or cherries when in season.
Nuts and Sultanas are always good as are mandarins, apples & bananas (as long as they don’t get smashed up). Corn thins are good too. kids love the flavour and they’re easy to tie back up and keep fresh.
Thanks Mums for the answers – love the dried fruit and nut and popcorn ideas. It is quite a long trip and these will be good in little bags. 🙂 I often do little bags of food, but looking for new ideas -thanks again.
I like fruit, can’t go wrong really with fruit, it lasts quite a while, is tastey and refreshing and healthy. Dried fruits and nuts are good too. Sandwiches if you eat them within a certain time
