Hello!

Hi mums, I have a 7 month old who weighs 9.5 kg. I have so much trouble getting him in and out of his car seat. He is still in the reverse position as he is a little too short to be turned around. I just am finding it so hard to get around the straps that hold the chair in place. It’s that bad I get anxiety and I’d rather stay at home.

  • With our first one, we had a two door car and had the car seat set into the middle of the back seat. I cannot remember how I managed to get him in and out of that, but I did!

  • Just be mindful of your back. The more you do it the stronger you’ll get, especially as bubs grows

  • Wow, what a lifter! Same advice, practice at home in your driveway. The more you practise, the easier it will get. You’ll work it out

  • Do you have the carseat in the middle for easier access ?

  • Try practising at home in your driveway, until you get better at it and get over the anxiety. Once you’re confident doing it, it’ll get easier

  • Loosen the side tether, put him in then tighten it again

  • My tip is…..to do it carefully to avoid hurting yourself or bub

  • no tips sorry! my 6 month old is 10 kg! I don’t have any troubles though.

  • i have a neat commodore and an old jeep 4×4 i find it very difficult in the commodore no matter what child seat i use, i have 3 for our cars and grandparents car, i tend to only drive the 4×4 lately because i have the same trouble when in the commodore because the only anchor is in the middle and the car itself is too low to the ground so i am constantly bending right down to get him out. i know this probably hasn’t been much help. just try to put the babys seat on the side and if you have the choice of using i higher car that would help.

  • may be it may be worth looking into getting a much easier style to use. see if a friend has one you could borrow.

  • Yes, this can be so stressful! Putting the seat on the side near the door, rather than in the centre of the car can make it heaps easier. I agree with the loosening and preparing the straps first, and also bending your knees and bracing your core muscles to support your back. Good luck.

  • Loosen the straps and tighten them every time. It took me a while to get the hang of it and it’s so much easier when you do. If you are unsure, you can go to your RAC or similar and they will show you. Stores that sell car seats can help too.

  • I would go somewhere and get your seat and child assessed, as it shouldn’t be so hard for you. They may be able to suggest something different you can do or if he can be moved into the other position. Don’t be hard on yourself and if you do stress out about going out it won’t be for long before you can turn him around. Being a mum is not easy, but you sound like a great mum so give him a kiss and yourself a pat on the back.

  • Anxiety in this situation is very normal. I went through the same thing. My seat luckily has a strap that I can losen to help get bubs out. Does yours have a strap? My suggestion is to pop bubs in feet facing you and turn once in the car. My sister did this with her little man and it seemed to work best. Good luck Hun and try not to let your fear and anxiety run your day. I did for a while and it wasn’t good for either of us. Xxxx

  • I would suggest getting all the straps untangled and lay them straight over the sides of seat, before picking baby up. when you put him in, place a hand on top of head to avoid banging it on door frame and remember to bend at the knees to avoid straining back muscles. good luck!
