My Bub is 6 months old and I’m wanting to try some finger food options. What type of bread should I use to toast? What toppings should I use?

  • I started with wholemeal, preferably homebaked sourdough as it’s better for the gut and easier to digest. Many store bought breads are highly processed and not fermented. I buttered the toast with ghee butter (butter without milk solids) to start with.


  • I wouldn’t introduce cheese too early in case your baby is lactose intolerant. It is surprising how many are. Also some babies can’t cope with the extra fat content in cheese at too young an age. Their liver has to be able to cope. It is also important to remember that vegemite has a high salt content and strong flavour. You would only use a light smear of it initially. I find Peanut Butter tends to stick in the roof of their mouth. I would be worried about it sticking “on the way down” too. I know one of my little ones had problems with it but not other spreads.


  • I always use wholemeal bread


  • I’m a bakers delight high fibre white with vegemite lover, the texture of the bread when toasted is easy for bub to cope with yet it doesn’t break away easy, the ends are a great treat for him on shopping day too! We have one each :) they are that bit tougher than regular bread and he can go to town on them.
    Oh & I just get the high fibre because I have two older kids, not cause bub needs it.


  • I find that Tip Top bread is really soft and easy for gums with no teeth to chew.


  • I started with either wholemeal, rye or white and waited a little while before I gave her grainy bread. I don’t know if you really need to do this but I did because I’m a worry wart.

    I tried my girl with Vegemite, Peanut Butter, Butter/ Margarine, Jam, Cream Cheese.


  • Whatever bread you use at home is ok. Toppings can be, jam, Vegemite or dipped eggs if they have been introduced.


  • You can use any kind of bread, fruit,wholemeal,white or even crumpets. They are all great plain or with a tiny bit of Vegemite or low sugar jam.


  • I used wholemeal as that’s what we eat and what we had at home. Around this age I was recommended by a midwife to give nut spreads (supervised while child in highchair and be aware what to look for re allergies) so I used Nutella, smooth peanut butter (whole nuts are a choking hazard), mixed nut spreads, also vegemite, cream cheese


  • Whole meal should be fine, and I’d use just butter to start with.


  • I use wholemeal or a fine milled grain like bakers delight’s chia seed, my sone copes fine with it, we use avocado and no salt or sugar peanut paste as toppings and he likes them.


  • If your asking kids then its white all the way! But i find a nice wholemeal can get snuck in undetected most times!


  • Best to go a whole grain option for best nutrition, but maybe avoid one with too many seeds in the early days. Fresh avocado is a great spread. In fact slices of avocado are a good finger food. If you’re not worried about nut allergies then 100% peanut butter is good, or almond butter.


  • I think wholemeal is the best option. My son loved his vegemite on toast for breakfast. We also used mashed banana at times and grilled cheese.


  • I started mine on wholemeal. Mine loved it with vegemite or gravy at dinner time. I would make french toast on the weekends for us and our babies loved that. In winter I would make baked beans and toast and our kids loved this as a lunchtime treat dipping their toast into their sauce.


  • i would use white or wholemeal once they like that i would then try a wholegrain.


  • I would use wholemeal, avoid white as it is not that healthy and seeded breaded could pose a chocking hazard if bub is just starting solids. Toppings I would do would be vegemite, mashed banana, mashed avocado, melted cheese (but make sure it is cool), cottage cheese.
