Hello!

We recently went on a family holiday and I just couldn’t believe the number of tourists that were staring and taking pics of my little girl. She’s got really curly hair and bright blue eyes so yes, very cute, but I hated it! I was gobsmacked and just didn’t know what to say! Has this happened to anyone and what did you do?

  • Wow! I wouldn’t feel comfortable with that at all.
I’d ask them to not and if they continued I’d take my child away.

  • Yes it happened a lot to me and my eldest two. especially when younger they were very blond and that’s a rarity for Asians. I don’t mind too much as long they ask permission to take a picture, but when they don’t I can’t appreciate it either.
Maybe compare it a little when you travel to exotic countries and see rural tribes you may be so intrigued you like to make pictures too…

  • It’s very inappropriate for people to be taking photos.

  • It’s very rude of people to take photos of someone else’s child. I would put a big hat and sunglasses on my child to protect them.

  • Are you certain they’re focussed on your daughter and not on something in the distance? I would casually put myself between my daughter and them, do a casual photo bomb lol

  • I’ve never encountered this and would probably just move away quickly.

  • I would speak to them politely and ask them not to photograph your children. You don’t know them and don’t know if they are going to use them illegally.

  • tell them that it’s not ok to take pictures

  • If you see someone taking a photo of your daughter, move her away and give a very disapproving look to the person and make them as uncomfortable as you were made to feel.

  • I would just walk away. If they are persist ant I would tell them off

  • Oh no! Did they ask your permission first? We’ve had parents ask if they can take photos of our kids if they’ve been playing with their kids at a playground (ie. all the kids playing together), and I’ll consent to that. But if a random stranger tried to take a photo, we either move away or politely ask them to stop and delete the photo. It’s very rude of them to stare, sometimes I wonder how they’d feel if you stared back. In saying that, I’m probably guilty of watching someone else’s child if they’re really acting out or being extra adorable, but I always try to catch their parents eye and smile or start a conversation (yes, clucky mum syndrome) – and I would Never have pulled out a camera, I don’t understand why they’d want a photo of an unknown child. I hope your next holiday goes smoother.

  • We have the same thing, sometimes to the point of stalking. My husband had to have words with a group who started filming our twin girls…

  • Yes, happens to my sister’s kids all the time. It can be awkward to say anything. They just tend to move off if its happening too much.

  • As a we were a big family with blond hair blue eyes, and I remember Chinese tourists ALWAYS taking photos of us. But as a parent now I’d have no idea what to say! You have every right to say no photos please, if that’s a bit awkward maybe just remove yourselves from them slightly?
