Hello!

I wanted to give homemade bread a try. The recipes states to leave the dough in a warm place till it doubles. I was just wondering what temp should it be? Also what are some suggestons of where to put it so it is in a warm place?
Thanks everyone.

  • Nearby any heat source. When too cold you could place it covered in a 50C oven

  • windows sill often works. In winter when there is no warmth in the sun, sometimes on top of the microwave works as we use it a lot and the heat from it lingers above it for a while.

  • The car idea does work – I tried it!

  • A friend of mine places her bowl of dough in her car because it’s always warm and help the dough to rise.

  • We usually have our wood heater going all year round, so I sit my dough next to that. Or somewhere inside in the sun is also good

  • I usually just put it on top of the oven when making bread.

  • I think it is always room temperature and cover it up with a tea towel. I see it on tv and other people do it and perhaps summer is better to make it …?

  • In a warm (not hot) parked car works well – you always put the windows down a bit if the car is too hot. I also pre-warm the flour as this helps make a lighter bread. Not too keen on very heavy home made bread.

  • I’ve never made bread from scratch before. Some of these ideas are pretty inventive!

  • I like the comment with you fill the laundry trough with hot water and place the dough in a bowl, covered in cling film for half an hour or so. Very good!

  • lol yeah the good ol’ kitchen bench

  • I fill the laundry trough with hot water and place the dough in a bowl, covered in cling film for half an hour or so. Always gets the dough to rise.

  • I wrap mine up and pop it on the front seat of the car :) if it’s an awful day I heat the oven on low turn it off and pop my dough in there. happy baking :)

  • When we made bread we put on the kitchen bench and it was fine!

  • There are some great tips here. Thanks everyone. I am a bit anxious about making home made bread as I have never made it before.

  • A friend of mine make a gluten free one (her husband is wheat intolerant) using a packet mix. She mixes hers with hot water and lets it rise then bakes it in her oven.

  • I usually cover the bowl with a tea towel and sit it near a closed window that has sun coming in.

  • I place mine in a covered bowl under the range hood light, it gives enough warmth from the light to do the job.

  • I have a fireplace so put it near there… But You can put the oven on low, turn it off then put the dough in. Just be careful it’s not too warm so it doesn’t bake! Things do rise eventually, it may just need longer if it’s not so warm :)

  • I make bread weekly. I put it in the oven (oven off) with a cup of boiling water from the kettle, works a treat. I have also been known to put it in the laundry closet when I’m using the dryer. Good luck!
