Hello!

I’m keen for my children to learn a language other than English. Can anyone recommend good courses or apps to use?

  • The best way would be for you to learn another language and speak to them in that language at home

  • See question just above this one. I think duolingo was the one suggested

  • Learning from a person is easier than from an app. There might be language tutors in your area.

  • A tutor or small group class face to face is best to learn a language. Look in your local paper or noticeboard for teachers

  • Nothing beats someone actually talking to child – consider face to face classes, or a babysitter or carer with another language.

  • Duolingo is a good place to start. There are heaps of apps out there but you need to put the time and effort in to become conversational and fluent.

  • Yes you have to keep it up ! I learned 4 languages too (German, French, English and Dutch) and like you mom101628 I don’t remember much

  • I love the comment to learn sign language! Like all languages unless you practice you will not remain fluent, so I wish everyone good luck with it! I learned 4 languages and cannot remember any of them now even though I got A’s in my exams with them.

  • Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk & search for free language courses. Lots to choose from & different levels to choose from. Good luck. I found it very good for myself so I assume ur child will enjoy it.

  • Duolingo’s pretty good. But going through resources online and putting the names of the object in the other language is a good visual cue e.g. putting “réfrigérateur” on the fridge can be useful

  • Definitely try kids cartoons in a different language. There is an Arabic cartoon called Freej, it’s in Arabic and you can get subtitles. It’s also funny for adults:-)

  • I like your answer mom169700 !! Sign language is a great language to learn and a valuable language to use ! We did it with our youngest

  • You may want to think about both learning Sign Language. Good for brain development (even Adults) and will come in handy for you if you are wanting to work part-time in a school. That is how a friend of mine started her job.

  • Yes I agree, start talking a different language together and get some dvd’s in that laguage

  • Our little one is learning through her grand parents. Not sure of any apps for those who don’t have family who speak another language sorry but they will learn in school usually

  • Do you speak another language yourself? It’s best to get them to learn through everyday conversation or to learn another language together! Our 2 year old is bilingual we don’t speak English to him at all yet he still knows English through playgroup etc. not sure of any apps sorry. Good luck !
