Hello!

Has anyone hired (or bought) an electric breast pump to use at home? I hated the manual one I had for my first baby and am wondering if it’s worth the expense.

  • I got an ABA membership (I thought it would be worth it. I did end up buying an electric Medela Swing pump through them (with a 10% discount) as I had terribly cracked and sore nipples after discharge from hospital. I couldn’t have continued breastfeeding without the pump to give my nipples an opportunity to recover. Because of my situation, I knew that I didn’t have the time to manually pump multiple times per day which is why I chose to get an electric one.

It might be a good idea to check out gumtree for a second hand electric pump and then just buy the new attachments.

  • if you will use it a lot or would prefer to have your hands free for other things, then go the electric pump. It is up to you really. The pumps do the same thing so look at your budget and time and weigh it up.

  • What ever you feel most comfortable with! Also don’t be afraid to ask your midwife on education how to use it properly to avoid damage to your breast

  • I have a manual one and use it daily. Should have bought an electric one! Definitely buying an electric one for the next Bub.

  • I have the medela electric pump (a friend said the manual knes are hard to use and painful). The medela imitates the baby sucking, wasn’t nhard to use and not painful. It wasn’t the cheapest pump but you get what you pay for i recommend it. Otherwise you could try and win the Philips one on this site!

  • I guess it would depend on how often you plan to use it. If you are only pumping occasionally a manual one would be ok. However, I would spend the extra money on an electric one just for the ease of it.
