Hello!

My son is nearly 4.5 and his Dad thought he was ready to take his training wheels off, but my son was not keen and wanted them back on. I had said I didn’t think he was quite ready (Dad wanted to do it months ago!). I remember my eldest son being much older – around 6 I think but he was one of the last in his group of friends. I’d be interested to know what other parents have found. I know the child has to be ready but my first did need us to make the decision for him otherwise he still would have had them on as a teen :)

  • You can always leave the training wheels on, but raise them high enough that they don’t interfere with the balancing of the bike. When my son started riding without training wheels I got him to practice on the grass – it is harder to ride on grass but was effective for him. He was 4.

  • Different ages for different children, my boy still has training wheels at 4 and isn’t ready to take them off but my friends 4 year olds took theirs off at 3!

  • I think around 6 years of age. I recall one day dad took the children to the oval and removed the training wheels and they came back riding just like that! I had been hesitant and worried about this being done but left them to it. I think the best thing was that the child didn’t pick up on my anxiety and just did it… (if they thought I had reservations I think they would have gone with what I thought and held back from having a go).

  • Both

  • around 4 with my eldest. different ages for different children though

  • You watch while he’s riding and if you notice his training wheels rarely touch the ground, he’s ready to lose the trainers

  • It is different for every child and some kids are confident and some are less confident – it takes time. As long as you are there to support them.

  • My son was 1 month off turning 5 at christmas time we told him we would take his training wheels off and if he taught himself how to ride his bike without them before his 5th birthday (4 weeks away) then we’d buy him a motorbike. He taught himself in 2 weeks! We kept our end of the bargain though. He would ride along side of our lattice works. My 2nd son turns 5 in January and since taking his training wheels off he hasnt been interested in riding anymore, his already got a quad though. It depends on the child. My 1st boy was very shy and withdrawn. My 2nd son is a little dare devil but I think might take him longer. Good luck

  • my son was 5 and a half when we took his off, The school was having ride to school day the next day where they all meet up and rode to school. My son wanted them off so we took them off and told him if he couldnt ride it there was no ridding to school the next day. Well with in ten minutes he was riding up and down the street no worries with a few wobbles but he was ready for it. I say do it when he is ready and not before.

  • I’m going to get a balance bike for my kid but I would think that it is all about whether they are confident enough to balance by themselves, maybe say we will just try a few times without them and see how we go?
