Hello!

This might seem silly but my basil plants keep dying! I am watering them regularly, they get sun most of the day and don’t seem to have any bugs or spots on them. They always just go all droopy or don’t grow enough to be usable. We live in a unit so keep them on the balcony in small pots. Would appreciate some advice on how to best look after basil or any herbs in general. Thank you in advance!

  • I think basil does best in the garden, maybe they’re just struggle to thrive because they’re in a pot. Make sure the pot is large enough, or otherwise plant them in a garden bed

  • Growing basil is hit and miss for me. Sometimes it thrives and sometimes it doesn’t even start to grow. I’m not sure what the problem is.

  • I have a small herb pot ( basil , coriander , parsley ) given to me from the kids on Mothers Day in May and was told you it needs to be watered a little bit each day . So maybe you are overwatering it . See if you can check the soil and if it is moist enough for it to stay healthy . You also need to pick at it everytime it grows so don’t let it overgrow either . Hints and tips from the sales assistant at the time apparently .

  • I went through the same thing and gave up!!

  • There’s a few good suggestions here, I will be keeping in mind when I start my herb garden

  • Try using a richer soil and make sure you are growing it in season. You might be watering it too much.

  • So basil does it hv a season that ITs supposed to b grown? Maybe that’s the issue? Clearly I no green finger!

  • I hope you were able to get the required help

  • It’s hard when u live in a unit! Try asking at the garden shops!

  • Wish I could help – I have a “black thumb” for gardening -everything I touch, dies. Promise I haven’t touched your basil!
My BIL is an incredible gardener though, and he suggested taking them inside, popping them on a window sill where they will get some sun, and don’t water too much.

  • Over watering and the cold may have contributed to it. Wait for warmer weather

  • You could put it in a shade house. Wen you cut it make sure you cut it just above the shoot.

  • They may be getting too much sun. I remember mum growing basil when I was a kid and we had the same problem.

  • I think its one of those plants that dont like frost at all. Need to keep out of frost.

  • Don’t over water, also basil needs a lot of room for their roots which grow rapidly, you need bigger pots.

  • It could be because of the extreme cold, I think you need to wait for the weather to start warming up

  • you could be over watering them

  • If its getting to much sun it might burn. Don’t put the water on the leaves, water at the base.

  • Im the queen of basil mate…… mix sand into the soil, don’t water daily, every 2 to 3, well drained, full sun.. mine are overtaking my vege patches @

  • You say they are in small pots.
If the pots are only small and they are in the sun most of the day then perhaps they are drying out too much and a larger pot would help retain some of the water.
