I need some simple cheap great ideas for book week costumes for a 9 year old girl and a 5 year old boy for this years book week dress up at our school. I always leave it until the last minute, but I would like to be more organised this year.

  • If there is a book about cars, you could make one out of a cardboard box??

  • I like to start with going through their favourite books fir ideas and inspiration. And go from there, I usually find something

  • Yes I would just use a bit of imagination too. Good luck!

  • First, work out their favourite books, then go from there

  • I’m sorry I can’t give you any ideas as I’m here to watch and take note. I’m not at that point of doing book week dress ups but I’m worried about it!

  • It should always be about what books and characters your children love. Usually cartoony characters Aren’t too difficult to do a dress up for. Just use a bit of imagination.. Good luck!

  • Meg and mog is an easy option. Mrs wishy washy is always a favourite of mine. Alice in wonderland, the wizard of oz. As for 5 yr old boys I found my preps tend to come as dr Seuss characters.
    Good luck !

  • We’ve done Max from ‘Where the wild things are’ a white onesie and a home made golden crown. We’ve made Peter Pan following the step by step instructions on
We’ve also done Willy Wonka with a tall hat, walking stick, and golden ticket

  • It really depends on what their favourite book at the time is. Get them to pick a book or two early on and then choose a costume from the book that appeals and is pretty easy to make. Like where’s wally, a striped top and hat with some glasses and your set. Action heroes can be a bit toughr but you can sometimes purchase reasonable ones and if you look early enough in the year you wont be at peak time or price.

  • My daughter is a school teacher and dresses up every year as well. One year she went as : Elizabeth from:”The Paper Bag Princess” simply make a dress out of brown paper, make a crown but remember it is bent out of shape, smear on some charcoal or similar for dirt and your done.

But if you google: Images of book week costume ideas you will be flooded with heaps of wonderful ideas.

BEST OF LUCK and hope your youngens have a great time. :-)

  • i dressed my son as the hungry little catterpillar for kinder book week.

  • 5 yr old boy could do wally, or any superhero jake the neverland pirate, 9 yr old girl could be monster high, any princess, alice in wonderland, the ideas are endless,

  • what is your childs favourite book or books they love? You could get a character from there.

  • How about a Mr. Man costume – just paint the character on a cardboard box; Veruca Salt from Willy Wonka – a red dress and headband and make a golden ticket (or Charlie – regular clothes and a chocolate wrapper and gold ticket); Peter Pan – green shirt and pants and make a little felt hat; Red Riding Hood would be easy; Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz – blue sleeveless dress/white shirt and red shoes (or old sneakers sprinkled with red glitter).

  • When she was nine, my daughter dressed up as Princess Leia. We didn’t buy anything except for the small sabre laser that we took at the Reject Shop.
