With family assistance we were sent a letter stating the kids could get up to $1000 in dental. Does anyone know exactly what that covers? Is it just check ups or cleaning or does it just cover major work or braces?

  • I’m pretty sure you can use it for a lot of dental procedures but some are so expensive so the money wouldn’t last long. I would contact your dentist to find out what it actually covers. I do have a friend who used it for her kids and they had check ups, cleans and fillings

  • I would speak with your dentist to find out what it covers.

  • From memory, it covers general dental work such as fillings, extractions, cleaning. But not any extras such as braces. Sorry about that

  • We’re meant to be eligible and our dentist is included in the scheme but the last couple of times we’ve been they can’t find us on the system. Its very frustrating.

  • I am also eligible for this for my 2 children that are in high school. You are still eligible to use the school dentist with or without this letter. Unfortunately the waiting list to use the school dentist is really long so there is a website you can check to see which dental surgeries are participating. Sorry, I don’t know what the website is, but at least the wait is a lot shorter than the school dentist. Orthodontic work isn’t covered.

  • Hope you found the information you were looking for on dental costs. I found information by googling health sites too – well worth googling.

  • It does cover general dental and even things like root canals and extractions but does not cover any orthodontic or cosmetic dental.

  • I used it just twice. And it’s my understanding that it doesn’t cover any orthodontist work.
After those two times, I stopped going. It’s easier to go to our dentist, that is covered anyway by Medibank.

  • I would say its just checkups as major works and braces costs thousands of dollars. You will know the cost by visiting your dentist and asking for a quote beforehand . Also with benefits , you need to ask if it has to be a nominated dentist by Centrelink /Family assistance or can you pop into any dentist.

  • No idea – but I imagine there should be some information about the scheme on a website. Maybe ask them for a link to a site with the information or ask a dentist as they should surely know about the scheme.
