I have two girls I look after fortnightly, and I have to every time treat them for nits, and solid infestations. Any advice would be greatly appreciated on how to beat this problem.

  • Since you only look after them fortnightly it’s hard to beat this by you alone. When my kids have nits I fine comb their hair DAILY after covering their hair with conditioner. I also spray their hair daily with a solution made of white vinegar, tea tree oil and water when I brush their hair normally.

  • I read on this site that Coca Cola kills nits. I’m not sure if that’s true but worth a try.

  • Cover hair in thick conditioner to smother the nits for at least 1 hour and do every 3 days until the problem is gone. I had to stop my child hugging everyone as this is how she was contracting them.

  • Conditioner smothered onto dry hair and left for 10 minutes will suffocate live nits. Comb out dead nits and eggs. But if you can’t comb out don’t worry. Even killing off a few every day helps. Must do for 3-4weeks until all the eggs have hatched and nits suffocated. If the parents wont help the child can treat themselves. As them to smother their head with conditioner and leave for 10 minutes every day. Then wash out. $2 pot should fix the problem.

  • You need to speak to their parents about this situation.
It is extremely unfair for you to be battling this problem, especially if they are not contributing.
We use the Nit Wits spray & it truly is a miracle!
It begins working straight away, doesn’t have a horrible scent & works very well!
    I strongly recommend it!
Don’t forget to have a word with the childrens parents, they have to do their part to or this circle is just going to keep continuing.
    Best of luck!

  • Unless the children’s parents are going to help from their end it’s going to continue to be a difficult battle for you im afraid

  • Nit comb and some oil, like coconut to help get them out and so you don’t hurt their hair. Wash with nit shampoo. Wash all their pillows etc to kill any nits.

  • Using a proper knit comb from the chemist is a must! It is very time consuming but gets all the eggs out. A good quality foam from the chemist but keep it going for a few weeks after infestation to really get on top of it. Apply the foam to the hair and then cover with cling wrap to smother! Good luck!

  • I have found uncle toms nit solution works really well:) it comes with shampoo and a leave in treatment. Maybe get some information on some products and put them in the kids bag . Even say it’s from school ?

  • Bragg\’s apple cider vinegar poor over their hair, saturate it, then cover with a shower cap for 30 min. U could then add some rosemary essential oil (u can get it here http://www.bit.ly/familyhealth04) to their shampoo as a prevention, it acts as a lice repellent.

  • When my son had them I asked the chemist which was the best head lice and egg killer. Can’t remember the name of it but it worked brilliantly. Green and white box and all chemist recommend. Then everytime he went to school I would put either gel in his hair or hairspray. The lice cannot hold on and lay eggs on hair that has it.

  • I heard if you completely cover all the hair in conditioner and put plastic bags over the hair so it’s airtight and after an hour they should have suffocated and died. If they’re not too young you can use a hair straightener to burn and kill the eggs and comb out.

  • I have been told that tea tree oil, baby oil, coconut oil, or something with the oil slick properties prevent the nits from attaching to the hair. There are the treatments that are available at local stores called RID or NIT lice control, but they are chemicals that can be irritating to the scalp and burn the childrens heads. Be sure to use a fine tooth comb to remove all nits from the hair and wash any clothing, bedding, etc. that they come into contact with in hot water and hot dryer. They also have furniture and carpet spray to kill the lice if you get infestation. It works for mattresses too.

  • I use cheap conditioner
Bruce the girls hair the apply enough conditioner to saturate hair and comb through with nit comb till all the hair is done. You will have to do this everyday for 10 days to break the life cycle
Wash brushes etc and pillow cases check all family members
You can also run a hair straightener through their hair after hair has been rinsed to kill any eggs
