Hello!

I got diabetic whe I was 30 yrs old i.e. 2 yrs after my first child was born. Untill then, all my glucose results were normal. But since I got diagnosed with diabetes my hba1c has been consistently above 10. Been on Glucophage.

Just found out I’m pregnant second time and very very nervous. Luckily my reading since a month hasn’t gone above 8. Been actively controlling diet and walking often.
How did you manage your pregnancy if you were already diabetic? Is the child always born with diabetes? Were you able to get through preg without insulin shots? Anything I must watch for in particular?

  • I haven’t experienced diabetes myself, but I have a couple of friends who had an awful time with pregnancy. So much so that they aren’t keen on a second baby and the first one is school age

  • Make sure that all the medical professionals you are seeing are aware of your Diabetes. They should be able to advise you what is and isn’t suitable for you to eat. Unless your Diabetes is hereditary your baby hopefully will not get Diabetes. You will probably have to have more blood tests than normal.

  • Given You should already be under the care of an endocrinologist I would speak to them. Your HBA1C is quite high, 10 is extremely high, I’m glad it’s coming down but you need to ensure you are doing the right things for you and bub. Good luck.

  • You really need medical advice. But watching your diet and exercise is vital.
