My eldest daughter just turned 11! She wanted a huge party with everyone from school invited but we just couldn’t afford it. We decided to give her $200 and told her whatever was left over after buying everything for the party she could keep. The only thing I bought was the cake. She cracked me up, quite quickly most of the kids were stripped from the list and she decided on a sleepover with 7 girls instead, she bought food, pool toys & things for games and ended up with $45 change and was very impressed with herself. Watching her shop for bargains was very funny and it gave her a good idea of how much things really cost!

  • Love the concept here – so many lessons simply taught – including deciding what is a want and problem solving. Thanks for sharing this fantastic idea.

  • Good on you! A perfect opportunity in learning about finance and budgeting. Always good to start kids on financial literacy at a young age.

  • What a great idea… kids just don’t realize how much things cost until they have to pay for it themselves.

  • that is a great way to get her involved well done to you. Knowing that she got to organise it as well and shop for it herself is fantastic would have been a great time for all of them.

  • That’s a great idea. She now knows even better the value of money! To have a nice time you don’t need indeed much money. Well done! And happy birthday to your daughter!!
