  • First birthdays are all about surviving the first year. Lol just enjoy it no matter how much you spend or don’t spend

  • No child would remember their first birthday, so spending over $100 on a first birthday party is just a waste of money, unless you live to impress other people. A birthday bbq or picnic would be enjoyed by everyone, and wouldn’t cost the earth.

  • Small and tasteful is best. With family and perhaps mothers group friends if you’re in one.

  • Why spend so much on a birthday party that your child will never remember, I think at that age a huge over the top party is only held for the adults, why not just have a nice day at home with family and a few close friends having a BBQ I know I would remember that more than going out and spending a fortune and not really enjoying yourself.

  • to be real about it all you can do a nice party at home as most would be for adults and older kids as really do you remember your first birthday ….he won’t. Make or by a cake and have family to help celebrate the day. Just think of what else you could use or buy what your child needs than a huge party that costs way to much that he will not remember.

  • My eldest son’s first birthday was huge.I can’t remember how much I spent but I had a face painter & jumping castle & it seemed liked every Aunt, Uncle, neighbour & friend was there. Spent lots of $$ on food, cakes & decorations.Do I regret it -no. Does he remember it- no.Did my other son have the same-no..well perhaps not to the same extent. Do you live & learn- yes. Do what you feel comfortable with & what you can afford.Goodluck

  • Some people just have to keep up with the Jones and I can say I am not one. You can put on a lovely party at home with some lovely homemade cakes and treats and if your son has cousins or close friends his age you may even like to have a BBQ with the littlies and family. My children have all been to extravagant birthday events and their most liked/favoured was the birthday parties at home or other childrens home when they were at the age to play pass the parcel, pin the tail etc games. Spending heaps of $$$$ does not necessarily mean it is memorable.

  • Our boy celebrates his first early next year. We won’t be doing much or buying much. Would much rather spend the $$ on savings. Bub won’t remember it – plus I spoil my boy all year around with toys and clothes. If we do buy much, it will probably be clothes and Manchester – things that will be well used/last.

  • Here’s the thing: it’s a birthday your kid will only remember through photos. I wouldn’t go over the top. We had a very simple afternoon tea for friends (mostly adults since kids don’t really have friends at that age) – probably spent about $50. And we have done that for all our kids’ first birthdays.
