Hello!

I was just wondering if anyone could suggest some budget friendly meal ideas for my family and I.
Something different to the usual Spag Bowl, Rissoles etc.
Thanks

  • I have a running series on my blog happening at the moment. Its mostly meals we forget about.
So for example lazy french toast.

A block of Bread cut into thick pieces. dipped in egg and milk and pan fried. You can add cheese if you have the luxury or garlic butter.

Its not a dinner but you know when sometimes you need something other than plain sandwiches AGAIN for the kids for lunch? or your thinking if you do a more filling afternoon tea you can scrape through with something light for dinner.

  • I just made a beautiful sausage casserole from one of the recipes another mum provided over in the recipes section. It was done in a slow cooker and was very simple.

  • Heres a good one if you like pasta dishes….get 2 PKTs of pasta and sauce mix (SIMPLI) from ALDI – 99 cents each. 1 large can of Tuna in sunflower oil (ALDI) – $1.89
Cook the past as per microwave directions – you can use any flavour e.g. macaroni & cheese, sour cream & chives – whatever your preference. When the pasta & sauce is cooked, add the tin of tuna, some grated cheese and a finely chopped onion and some chives or parsley into the hot pasta. place in a baking dish with some grated cheese on the top and grill until golden. This recipe will cost under $5 and feed at least 4 people with a green salad on the side. You can even add other things like cherry tomatoes or capsicum or mushrooms if you have anything in the fridge that you want to use up. Its a great affordable and tasty meal made in under 10 minutes…..

  • Also; soups are good for using leftover vegetables. Great with cheap or home made bread.

  • My boys love soup in winter and it’s cheap and makes stacks! With a cauliflower and some bacon and onion, cream, chicken stock and garlic you have a whole meal. Or there are a million variations of pumpkin or chicken and veggie soups out there too. Try Googling family meals on a budget and I’m sure you’ll get loads of ideas.
    Good luck and have fun!

  • Soups are great and you can make any variation you like really. Chicken drumsticks are usually budget friendly and you can marinade or cook and then take the meat off the bone.

  • Slow cookers are wonderful money saving tools!
I pop a handful of leftover corned beef, or roast meat, or diced stewing steak in, with a can of tomatoes, a litre of water, a beef stock cube and whatever veggies are in the kitchen – onion, carrot, pumpkin, celery, potato etc – and after a day simmering, it’s a tasty and filling soup – slightly mash it and the kids don’t spit out the veggies!
