Hello!

hi everyone i recently put our daughter who at the time was 14 months old in daycare.

I understand kids get sick when in dacare, but she was constantly sick with no break and then she ended up getting hand foot and mouth and i took her out of daycare so i could get her better.

now i have no time to myself as she is home all the time and the older 2 girls are at primary school.

thats fine tho as i need to get her better.

What do you think of daycare centres do you or would you send your children?

what do you like about them or not like?

I mostly sent my daughter for the social aspect. As she doesnt play with kids her own age normally and also they ride ponies at her daycare centre, which is awesome.

I now take her to playgroup twice a week which she loves and also i get to socalize with other mums which is great.

my dilemma is do i put her back into daycare again once or twice a week once she is fully better and not sick anymore so i can have 1 to 2 days a week to myself and dont feel like im going nuts as i have no time to myself or do i keep her home.

I use to work in childcare centres and as a nanny so i which things to do with her and she is still getting time with children her age at playgroup.

maybe i could send her one day a week and see if she still gets as sick?

What do you think? thanks ;)

  • yeah daycare is notorius for sick kids! just about every week too. it can be so hard to deal with especially when you catch whatever they have got. but the good side is that your child is building up a really good immunity.

  • Day care centres a terrible place fir sickness. If she goes regularly tho, her immune system would build and she, hopefully, wouldn’t get as sick as often. I would stick to play group twice a week atm, as you say she’s still experiencing the social aspect without the illness. But definitely look at day care again sometime in the near future

  • Day care doesn’t suit everyone. For your daughter play group and sibling/friend time may be all she needs.

  • My son has been in daycare for 3 months now. He started when he was 9 months. We are forever getting sick but I know it is building up his immunity.
I have to put him in daycare as I need to work. You can put her in one day a week and see how it goes but then she could go to a playground and still get sick. I understand how you feel though about them constantly getting sick.

  • My daughter never went to day care and got hand foot and mouth.
I f I was you I would put her back in one day a week

    • True – kids do get sick in all environments and do build up immunity – again you need to decide what works best for your family.

      • Yes that’s true about deciding what’s best for your family. Didn’t realise I left that off. Thank you

  • Maybe sit down and work this out on paper with a list of pros and cons? It may help you to work this out? It is a decision only you can make and be comfortable with for you and your family situation.

  • I would put her back into daycare my son attends day care twice a week and playgroup once a week, it can help build up her immunity to bugs. But i would also look at what illnesses she is picking up all the time. if its the common cold not much can be done. But if it something else eg tonsillitis etc it might need to be looked at by a doctor. (you might need to ask for options instead of just been given medication all the time)

You do need some time out as it makes you a better more relaxed mum if you get a little me time. And its great for kids to have the confidence to make friends.

  • I put my youngest in one day a week. I think it’s good for everyone.
