Hello!

Apparently it is quite common especially for women to have small urine leaks. Pregnancy and child birth and menopause all work together to give the problem. Despite pelvic floor exercises it is something that I can never completely shake, and it occurs during a few specific activities – like skipping rope, jumping on a trampoline and doing the parent’s sprint events at kid’s sports days!

I’ve tried a few solutions – from super absorbent liners, to just not doing the activity – and have now found a solution that works the best for me. It is simply to wear black ‘sports’ knickers and shorts that are designed to cope with sweat. K-mart is my davour!

They are fast drying and do not show wet patches, so the small leaks (that would be a disaster in grey track pants, are not noticable). And some days the aforesaid activities do not even generate a problem, but when they do I just let that half-teaspoon of pee come out and get on with doing what I want to do! So far so good!

If you have ever struggled to do activities that you want because of this problem I encourage you to think about it and try this and see if it works for you! K-mart pants are $5 and the polyester shorts about the same, so already a lot cheaper than using all those pads!

  • If you haven’t already go to a physiotherapist, Some specialise in pelvic floor. I found it so great they could tell me how strong/weak mine was, if I was doing exercises correctly, and how to do them regularly. SInce then I’ve definitely had less leaks!!

  • While ‘just getting on with things’ is a great idea (and can probably improve core strength etc. to help pelvic muscles) a recent ABC health article does advise trying to fix the problem, since weak muscles can make prolapse etc. more likely when older. So just a warning.

    • Agree and I would add a visit to your gyno would be recommended.

  • Thanks for sharing your story and for the tip on the pants from K Mart. A good way to combat leaks – sneezing can be a problem? :(

    • Sneezing 2 or 3 times, coughing, tripping over something, not going to the toilet as soon as I wake up. Sometimes pants and shorts wouldn’t absorb enough for me.

      • I agree with the sneezing and in particular the need to go immediately to the toilet on waking from sleep. I have worked on my pelvic floor, but still have some of these moments. There are so many good products – pads and pants do help which is good. :)
