I have just had a phone call from my dentist saying that after looking at the X-rays we had taken last week we need to now see an oral surgeon and orthodontic for a tooth which has not come down and is lying sideways in my child’s mouth. Not really what I wanted to hear! Speaking to friends who’s children have all been having orthodontic work recently all they complain about it how much it costs all the time! How do you know if you are being ripped off or do you just have to go along and not question it?

  • I’ve just been to the dentist. He told me I have excellent oral hygiene and my teeth are in pretty good condition. There are however some things that need some attention, not a lot of work, but it will cost you $1200 :/

  • You could ring around and get other quotes. I recently went to the dentist, it isn’t a favourite place for me so I avoid going. After telling me I have excellent oral, health and nice looking teeth, he then presented me with a bill of $1200 fir further work that needed to be done :0 Glad I had such good teeth

  • second opinion and third one as well, detailed quote, we went thru this and we had quotes from $4k to $8.5k, we knew what needed to be done, it was obvious, but we were referred to a specialist who actually had a flat fee, he was fantastic, his wife is his secretary and does all the bookings and payments, he took heaps of time with my daughter, she saw him frequently over 3 years and her teeth are wonderful, she had to have special xrays and he referred us to a place that bulk billed, others I have spoken to have been sent to other places that cost them $100 plus out of their own pocket, so he considers everything, the other thing was that he billed us over 3 years so we could claim our maximum on private health and we could pay off the gap over the 3 years. so shop around, not all dental people are just in it for the money some actually care and help you out, others are money making corporations, I just know the care we got was fantastic and she has divine teeth.

  • What a very true point, I’ve always sat in the dentist chair and just paid….. what do I know, I’m not a dentist, ask him to point it out in the xray…. best way to know if you an actually see it on the xray :)

  • if the child is school age then they should be able to go to the school dentist and have the work done for free even if they are not at there school at the time. Alot of dentists do alot of things that don’t need doing

  • I remember I had to have a lot of work done. Hate to think how much I cost my parents. I didn’t have an adult tooth to replace my baby tooth at the front so needed braces to fix that gap. Then I had another tooth that was coming down on top of all the others so I could’ve had that pulled (add on $400 odd) or pulled into place with the braces. We obviously went with the braces but with all the check ups etc that went along with it.

I would just ask to see the x-rays, it should be pretty obvious even for someone who doesn’t know what to look for as a tooth lying sideways should be easy to spot.

  • so hard to tell – you could get a second opinion

  • I would get a second opinion just to compare but a second will cost as well but that is what i did anyway. The cost of dentists and orthodontic work can be so expensive it can be out of reach for a lot of families.
