Gathering eggs is a childhood joy! There is nothing better than collecting some fresh, organic, free range eggs from some happy healthy hens! Keeping chickens in a backyard need not be messy, noisy or an overly complicated affair, all you need is a secure night pen; something that is snake, dog and importantly cat proof, building this pen from recycled material can actually be quite a fun family project! Most people dont realise that chickens come in many different sizes, shapes, and colours (and so do eggs!) Aruacanas for example lay a little blue egg that most children find delightful! If your thinking of keeping a couple of chooks spend a little time researching whats available, maybe incorporate a trip to the show or a local farm. Many places offer a ‘rooster replacement service’ when buying chicks too so upsetting the neighbors or getting stuck with a rooster is no longer a concern!

  • Only thing with keeping chickens in a pen in the backyard is it doesn’t take long for the ground to become crusted with poo. It takes a bit of cleaning. But it is great to have home grown chickens and eggs. Then dig a veggie garden and use all the excess chook poo for fertiliser

  • I can remember collecting eggs from my Granddad’s allotment as a child. There was nothing better than have a boiled egg for breakfast knowing I had collected it myself. Those eggs where the best tasting eggs I ever had.
