Hello!

I’m currently pregnant with my third child. I’m a little worried about labouring to quickly and not making it to the hospital on time. With my first pregnancy I was in active labour for 12 hours. My 2nd was only 2 hours start to finish. I’m worried that this time I may not make it to the hospital in time once I have got the kids all organised and someone here to watch them.
I guess what I’m asking is how quickly did you progress with each child’s birth?

  • my 4 labours where
    1st =4 hours
    2nd = 2h & 32 min
    3rd = 23 mins and
    4th =1h & 2 mins
    so my last was longer than 3rd so i wouldnt worry to much my doctor told me to pre pair for a home birth for my 4th but we had time to get to the hospital :)

  • I’ve only had one so far which was 18 hours labour so hopefully the next one would be quicker

  • I dont think any two people fit the same rule, I wish you good luck with your latest baby

  • No hard and fast rules for that one I am afraid.

  • Mine really didn’t get any faster at all. Don’t worry too much, this child could be different and want to stay in longer.

  • I can’t share my story as I had to have a c-section, but my sister has had 3 births. The first lasted 4 hours, the second was 2 and the third was around 6 hours. I hope that you follow the same pattern. Good luck!

  • This is a worry of mine too. my first was only 3hr labour! Hope when the time comes I have plenty of time!

  • Wow that’s a big difference! My first was 11hrs, my second was 6 1/2hrs. We thought my second was going to be born in the ambulance as we were living rural at the time, but thankfully she wasn’t! Unfortunately I don’t think I have any suggestions other than to call an ambulance if you think you’re not going to make it. Good luck!

  • I think each pregnancy is different and no logic in it at all as with my first it was 7 hours, my 2nd was 25 minutes, my 3rd 7 hours and my fourth 3 hours. so as you can see was a big mix up of different lengths.

  • I was very similar to you! I have 3 boys. Number 1 was induced and 7.5 hour labour.
    Number 2 was 2.5 hours from start to finish, My waters broke at home just after having a shower and that terrible urge to push was so strong! I tried with every thing i had t keep him in while hubby rushed us the 8 (usually 15 minute) trip to hospital, i literally walked into the birthing suite, pulled my pants down, got on the bed and pushed him out. Hubby was parking the car and almost missed it!
    With number 3 i was so scared of not making it to the hospital but it was a slightly longer labour or 3.5 hours.
    Good luck!!

  • My mother had 5 children, each one got progressively quicker to the point where my sister was what they term “a rapid birth.” I really hope all goes well for you and even birth is unique.

  • My labours got longer with each child. My first was my quickest by far, lol.

  • I’m a bit worried about that too but I take ages to get to 4cm then active labour has only been around 4 hours for both my boys. 1st labour all up was 41 hours and 2nd was 22 hours. ( from very 1st contraction to baby in arms ) I timed the trip to the hospital and its only 13 minutes lol so that’s good. I just guess once you get those 1st pains organise the kids right away. My fil and step mil are going over seas 4 days after my due date so if I don’t have him by then my mum is coming to stay ( she lives 5 hours away ) so she will be staying with us. Step mil and fil live next door, but work, luckily step mil only works 3 mins away from the hospital :) hubby works all over Sydney and I’m hoping he will be close by. I’m actually hoping to go into labour in the middle of the night, wishful thinking :P
    Good luck!
