As a single income family, I am always trying to find ways to repurpose or find uses for ordinary things. I am finding some great ideas out there. Like cleaning with lemon juice or getting stains from carpets with skim milk.

What everyday hints and tips do you have to share?

  • I have heaps of oranges growing on 2 trees & asked what I could do with them, apart from juicing them. Someone on MoMs said to cut the orange skins up & soak them in white vinegar for a couple of weeks. I’ve done this and it makes a really powerful grease-cutting cleaner, especially useful in the kitchen. Works really well, smells great & costs almost nothing. I also found a lot of really great cleaning tips on the following page …

  • Buy lemons in bulk when they’re cheap and put them straight into the freezer. They can be used in all sorts of cleaning products (as the ladies have already mentioned), but you can also grate them straight onto your salads and use them in recipes when frozen. Also, I’ve found that soaking your oven racks in plain clothes laundry powder overnight loosens the grime and it’s easier to scrub them clean in the morning. Put a little essential oil in with your washing to make them smell amazing and if there’s one oil that you LOVE, you can make a natural air freshener by putting a few drops on the INSIDE of the toilet roll before putting it on the holder and each time someone takes a few squares, it will release some of the scent into the air.

  • I use lemons (chopped up after using for juice etc) in sme water in a bowl to clean my microwave. Put on high for 8 mins, then leave for five. Remove bowl and wipe microwave with sponge while still steamy. Cleans off grease and leaves it smelling good.
