Recently one of my closest friend told me her dad had stage four cancer, that was in April, in November (the 16th) she told me that her partner and her had just got engaged (after 11 years) so that they could have a small ceremony that included her dad who was no in palliative care. A bittersweet moment for everyone involved. Sadly he passed away just 6 days later. His funeral was beautiful, very simple with mementoes of his life on the coffin, what really connected with me is what the minister said “There are two dates in life, one is your birth and the other is well, but these dates aren’t the important part, it’s the dash (-) in between, for that is how our life is defined” That beautiful sentiment has stuck with me and has made me determined to live life to the fullest, love, laugh and forgive and cherish the small things (even the ones that drive you crazy) because that is life.

  • The sentiment of the minister is spot on.

  • The minister was right. We don’t have a say in the beginning or the end, but we do with the dash in the middle.
