My daughter is 24 weeks pregnant and has just read an article that you should not eat pate while pregnant wondering if anyone knows why as she’s a bit worried now she has been eating it most days for the last two weeks

  • yeah, this is the latest do not for pregnant women… I am German and spent my pregnancy eating pate, liverwurst, deli meats and all that stuff people are not supposed to eat now.. I don’t like cheese, so didn’t eat soft cheeses… hope your daughter has a smooth and happy pregnancy. good luck!

  • it can be an issue for the reasons already mentioned. I do hope that all is well, and you had perfect timing in reading that article

  • Yep she shouldn’t be eating pate, soft cheeses or anything like that as it could carry listeria.
I would be calling midwife/doctor and inform them what she has been eating and the amounts as well.
    fingers crossed its all good.

  • Damish70 is spot on with their answer. There are a whole swagger of foods that can cause listeriosis. Whilst listeriosis is rare, it can be extremely serious. I agree with Damish70 I would consult your treating dr, but also grab some information leaflets while you are there about listeria and the foods that can cause it.

  • Pate like soft cheeses ,ready to eat prawns, & store bought salads are foods that could contain Listeria. Listeriosis is a rare bacterial infection which can harm the unborn child resulting in it premature birth, baby being very ill or baby being stillborn. She needs to speak to her OBGYN or midwife as I’m sure she’ll be worried.

  • I think because it’s got meat in it and it’s cold! Mind you I didn’t stop eating everything I wasnt supposed to while I was pregnant. Just check with the obs at the next appointment if she’s concerned.

  • I haven’t heard that before but perhaps they consider that to be the same as white cheeses, deli meats etc that can have listeria in it? I probably wouldn’t be too concerned, as long as it’s in moderation she should be fine. If she’s been living on it for the past two weeks I’d just tell her to start having it only occasionally (maybe once or twice a week?) if she’s concerned. She could also check with the doctor, they’d probably have a fairly good idea of whether she should be concerned or not.
