Hello!

My youngest starts school in the new year and I’m finding it hard to let him go. I expected him to be upset about school visits but he seems to be ok about it, which makes me sad. Being a single mum of 3 I’m finding it hard to let go I feel really silly and I know its normal to feel this way it just scares me to know how much he has grown and changed. I know he will be ok but can’t help feeling like this.

  • It is normal and natural to feel like this! I hope you’re feeling a little better now.

  • It is so normal to have anxiety , I know what this is like as my daughter cried when she saw me go and one of the parents looked at me with tears in HIS eyes . It does help if you get to know the school and perhaps some teachers and later on the fear will go away and then you will say what a capable child he/she is .

  • I felt the same as you. Now I have one daughter in Uni and one in year 12 so the school years will be behind us soon. Looking back they were great years, you’ve got lots to look forward to. There will be so many occasions when you will be asked to the school to see you son play sport or sing in a recital or compete in swimming sports and Mother’s Day breakfasts. Get involved as much as you can and you will meet so many more mums and get to know your son’s friends and it will be a very rewarding time for both of you. Enjoy it while it lasts because its almost over for me and I can’t believe how quickly the years have flown!

  • And you know what? This is a very very very normal reaction and nothing to be ashamed of. Even a mother of an 18 year old can still feel sad when they leave home because they dont want to let go. He will be ok, but your feelings are absolutely normal and its ok to feel that way.
